Husker 40 Breeder SPS tank

I'm not an all out SPS tank, but I am currently just running a 4x24 ATI. Right now I think it provides the par I need, but the coverage is slightly lacking (also missing the blue led pop).

I'm planning to ditch the two center bulbs and add a Nanobox Reef retrofit kit, keeping the two outer bulbs. It consists of 4 arrays each containing 13 led's. It also comes with a sick WiFi contoller that will also control the T5's and the fan. It also has the ability to do moon cycles, storms, cloud cover, etc. It is by far the best bang for your buck when it comes to adding led's to an existing t5 fixture.
Here's an example of what it'll look like.

Oh that looks nice. I like the reefbrites I have, but they aren't very controllable. I could easily do something like this with my 6 bulb fixture in the future if I want a bit more controllability. The retrofit reefbrites hanging on the sides doesn't make for a very beautiful fixture. I am not a huge fan of Wifi controllers after having the Hydra HDs. Mine would never connect when I wanted to and I was constantly resetting them. I hear they work well for some people, though, so it may have been my specific situation. Still, it would be nice to have some of the neat features while still having the T5s as the main light source.

So... After only a few days of switching to a T5/LED combo (mostly T5) the polyps have started to come out on corals that have been relatively polypless for months. I am also getting a huge color boost in some frags I have had for a little while, in particular the spainbow (which has kind of looked like crap since about 2 weeks after I got it). I am a huge fan so far.

I'm running (front to back):

Royal Blue Reefbrites
Blue +
Actinic
Blue +
Coral +
Blue +
Blue +
Royal Blue Reefbrites

So far I like the combo and my corals seem to as well. I could always replace the actinic with another Blue + if I seem to need the par (it doesn't seem like it thus far)

I'm currently running a 4 bulb.

Blue, actinic, purple, blue.

The Actinic makes it look less bright, but I am pretty sure the PAR is still there. It's just a spectrum the human eye does not pick up very well.

You might want to try swapping in a purple for one of the blue bulbs. It really helps some of the underlying colors in corals peak through a little bit more IMO. It definitely makes fish's colors more dynamic too.

Glad to hear you are happy having made the switch to t5.

Interesting, I think I will have to try that. Maybe I will try the ATI 16K-20K recommendation with one of the Blues being an Actinic:
Royal Blue Reefbrites
Blue +
Actinic
Blue +
Coral +
Purple +
Blue +
Royal Blue Reefbrites

Great work . I tend to like an equal balance between Blue+ and Coral+, its a whiter look but provides all the spectrum needed for acropora.

I added a single purple + to have this configuration front to back (B+ B+ C+ P+ B+ B+). I love the color that this combination gives and it really makes the pinks/reds/yellows pop more than I could ever get with LEDs.

As a side note that is a little frustrating, my longfin fairy wrasse badgered my yellow watchman goby to death and I suspect did the same for a solorensis wrasse. The whole family loved the solorensis, so we decided to try another one that looked a little healthier off the bat. The longfin fairy chased the solorensis into a crevice and was aggressively picking at his eye (the only part that was exposed). This caused me to take all the rocks out of my aquarium to catch and remove the longfin fairy. This was successful, and I hope I did it in time to save the solorensis. The solorensis is still hiding this morning (the first morning after he arrived), but I am hoping he gets some rest and comes out as soon as he realized the hell raiser is gone. I lost a pink lemonade frag trying to catch the devil wrasse (and maybe a couple of others), but there are some great local guys that are giving me some great deals on high end acros to replenish.

Sorry to hear about your fish troubles, but glad you like the look of having added the purple bulb!

Thanks. I am just glad to have caught him without much of an impact on the tank. The corals are loving the T5 bulbs. I am getting color improvement already and they keep polyps out with the lights on. I will post some picture updates soon.

Quick update with a cell phone snap. My tank seems to be loving the T5/LED combo. Finally getting some good colors out of the acros and growth is really taking off. My algae problem has pretty much all cleared up for the time being. We are about at the 5 month mark on the tank.

Looking good!

Looking good!

Thanks. I decided to take a few minutes and actually snag a couple shots with the good camera to document the minimal algae that currently exists.

FTS. I reaquascaped a bit to have it be a little less symmetrical. I also wanted to make the right side of the tank more for stags and fast growers like the birdsnests and with lower rock work. The left side has higher rocks and more of the cluster/tabling SPS:

This purple stylo has really been growing fast. It probably doesn't hurt that it is in a prime spot.

Right side of the tank. My pink birdsnest is actually pink now with the T5s, and not white.

This setosa was one of my first frags and it has set like a bump on the log for months. It has finally turned more orange (instead of just pink) and has started to grow. It has finally reached the end of the plug!

Blue stag has finally turned blue and is growing thicker and branching quickly.

ORA plum crazy. The color is a little blah, but it is growing pretty fast, you can tell by the new blue color on the new growth that has just been in the last month or so.

Forest fire digi from a local. It is really growing fast, and the orange color is not like anything else in the tank. Just finally starting to see some of the contrasting green.

Still not much color from the Vivid Rainbow Delight. I will stay patient. Any tips on these guys? It does appear to be encrusting rather rapidly.

One of my favorites right now. It was great when I got it from Battle Corals, but it really perked up in color after switching to T5s. Adam called it "Dale's Purple" in a grab bag, I think.
DalesPurple-12-27-16_zps9hvmtfyp.jpg

BC Secale. One of my first frags in this tank that has taken a beating from some of my SPS-noobie oopses, but it still keeps trucking.
BCSecale-12-27-16_zpse9qmoals.jpg

RR Grape Juice from BC. Two pieces that have encrusted together and started growing upward in the last month. It is also in a primo spot top/middle. It is just starting to get some decent lime green color on the body.

Voodoo corals sunkiss (essentially a sunset mille). Only in the tank for a couple of weeks, so it hasn't done much yet.
VC-Sunkiss-12-27-16_zpsddeftrjr.jpg

This BC Crimson Bliss was looking really pale under my Hydras and hadn't grown at all. It is starting to get some really nice pink/green and is finally encrusting along the base.
BCCrimsonBliss-12-27-16_zps9hxmbsvi.jpg

Joe's Psammacora. This thing grows really fast and has a cool shape and texture. Watching shapes/textures morph and grow with the colors is what I really like about the SPS tanks.

This PC Rainbow was completely brown, then I bleached it under my hydras when my nutrients dropped too low. Now it is finally getting some decent color back and it is starting to really shoot up branches.

And lastly, the BC Spainbow, which has improved in color the most since I switched to T5 with LED supplements. Here it was the first day after switching to the T5s (11/9/16):

Here it is today (12/27/16):
Spainbow-12-27-16_zpspjtoqotv.jpg

Obviously color is subjective, but I like the spainbow under T5s a lot better. It is also starting to grow a little bit too.

I am also just doing periodic Phosphate RX drops to keep phosphate low. Running a GFO reactor was annoying to change and it seemed to just keep phosphate to 0.00 and then spike up as it ran out.

Update: The noise of my Mag7 was bugging me, so I decided to see if I could dismantle the return pump plumbing and replace it with a Sicce. I can't recommend this pump enough. It is silent. I could hear my mag pump as I was walking down the basement toward my tank. Now, the only thing I hear on my tank is the slight hum of my gyres when I am next to the tank.

A local was unloading some SPS, so I picked up some cheap colonies: ORA frogskin and a cali tort. Also got a neat unnamed rainbow mille frag that has a lot of potential.

I also got a new camera and lenses (photography is another hobby, but I had some outdated gear and so I wasn't shooting much recently).

Nice setup, keep the updates coming.

Almost a month since the last update, so I guess here are a few more pictures for growth comparison. I can't believe how consistent my dKH is now- I only check it once a week or so. It is right at 7.3-7.5 every time.

The Tank is looking good.

LOL, well do not emulate my plan, run out of room get another tank:D

Yeah, I'd say you are about out of frag room. :)
Tank is looking great, especially compared to mine right now. We started at about the same time, but I had my skimmer pump go out and didn't get it replaced for over a month, and just last week my new nem decided to make friends with a powerhead.
Anyways, looking good. Resist the urge to add any more frags and let it all fill out a bit.
