Does anyone use a Hydor wavemaker? I have a maxijet that I could hook it up to. It sounds like a nice and simple device if it actually works.

I have not used one, however from what I have gathered they do a decent job of moving the water around as advertised. The drawback is that it cuts down on the flow from the powerhead. I was actually thinking of adding one to my biocube's return.

Design wise, it seems to make sense that it would make waves. From what you're saying I should go for a higher gph pump because of loss due to using the device. I wish I could see one in someone's system and hear their opinion. Thanks for the input :)

if you are talking about the rotating addon to a powerhead. yes i used one on my 55 gallon and it made wave motion and it did reduce the output alot . i used it on a aquaclear 70 power head and my main complaint is that after about 5 months the adapter wore out and i would find the wavemaker blown off and in the sand on coral you name it. it really started to get agravating everytime you come home from work and see the thing on the bottom of the tank again

I think I like the look of the sure flow maxi jet accessory better than the Hydor. I wonder what would be a good maxi jet pump though for a 6 gallon pico, 106 gph, 160 gph, 230, or 295? From what I gather the attachment increases the gph by alot. Some claim the 295gph increases to 1600 gph, is that true?

I just finished an advanced aquarist article where they experimented with the sure flow maxi attachment and they showed that a 160 gph pump pushed ~666 gph and used less energy! I'm wondering if the smallest maxi jet pump at 106 gph would be too much for a pico if it's pushing 5 to 6 times it's normal gph in a soft coral tank?

the maxi mods (as in eco mods and sure free mods) I had all 4 on mj1200 with the 2200 and or 2600 mods to it I can't remember in my honest opnion I liked them better as I had no dead spots. I still added one more with my tunze and also a k3 to the tank. to get the rest of the dead spots. for a smaller tank I think the smallest mj mod as those I stated above will only work on a mj 600 or 900. I am not 100% sure on that. but as the for the hydro flors they are good for a supplement in the middle for me. but like stated above after time you will be searching for it unless you gluee it on some how.

+1 for the nano and or a k1 you will be much more happier and it is roughly the same price. depending on where you live

Thanks guys! I'm going to go with the K1 and just forget adding the wavemaker. I wonder why the mods pop off and need to be glued, that seems to be a serious design flaw.

I even zip tied one on there lol I like the circular flow it provided. reduction in flow big time but it is what I wanted on the middle. You look @ most tanks and you will see seaswirls in the middle I always wonder why. until I added to the middle of mind. made a difference but that was on a 55 at the time.

another bad thing about the hydor flo for a smaller tank is the size of the attachment
i used to use one for my nanocube 6 and it was just gigantic
its pretty much the same concept as a powersweep, with long use gears get clogged and it will need cleaning
then the attachment to the pump, like everyone said, gets loose
decent but i wouldnt use one again

I searched google images and found a picture of the Hydor in a nanocube and the thing looks ridiculous. It sticks way out and is BIG. I think the maxi mod is much cleaner, it looks like a vortech mp. I wish I had the $$$ I would get a mp10, that would be sweet!

I tried using them for years. If you have snails and they crawl onto the spinning part it stops the rotation and strips the gears in them. Other than that they work ok. The max gph pumps they recommend is 295gph.

And yea, in a small tank the flo device and the powerhead combined are huge!
