I bought 2. A 150w and a 200w. Could both be defective?! Set both dials to 79 degrees. Tank temp reached 83.5 and still neither heater shuts off. Only when I turned dials to the indicator showing 75 or less do they turn off. ***?

Anyone else using them have advise? Besides getting rid of them at this time that is :)

That's the issue with heaters. The dial isn't accurate. In my experience the thermostats seem consistent enough, but after 3 years in the hobby I'm yet to find a heater that has an accurate temp gauge/dial on it. Trust your thermometer and given the thermostats consistency, you should be good.
Edit: I should add, I've used several brands and have had the same results with each one. I haven't used the hydor brand before though.

Cant depend on them, always set the temp in a separate container I test every one I get. The jager is what I have went to and they have a dial you can adjust to calibrate per say.

Well contacted Hydor. Told me to ship them back, at my expense for repair or replacement. Told them I'll just throw away the $90 I paid for both and the heaters :(

Unreal, with service like that I will reconsider ever buying a product from them again.

Lol-since I have to use these until payday, I've been able to make some adjustments. The 200w is in my return chamber set at 74 and has kept my tank at 80 all day :) The 150w although still in the tank (lazybones) is off.

Haha I'm doing a similar thing in my 10 gal reef I plug it in for 30min. which raises the temp 2 degrees and it usually takes around 5 hrs to drop back down. The craziest thing is my 220gal which has a 250w halide and 4 LED systems has no temp control at all and only ranges 76-79 year round.

I have a aquatop digital heater and a temp sensor it seems to hold pretty good

Best heater I've ever owned was the ViaAqua Titanium Heater, with temp prob and external controller.
As soon as I sell my old skimmer and lights I will be buying another!

Struggling with my 50w hydor in nano cube now. Yesterday tank temp went up to 85 and it didn't shut off and it was set at 75. Thermostat on those hydor are crap, I am getting a temp controller as I have little faith in them

Just called hydor today at first they said it is past warranty. When I pushed back and told them decent companies back their products up even beyond warranty, then he told me you can ship it to us and they will fix it. Not shipping at my expense for a flawed product or buying any hydor products again really. All I owe them is a nasty review for that heater.
