Hey there,

I have a well established reefer 170 that has been doing great for about a year. Started with dry rock. I recently moved the tank and added a hang on refugium with chaeto and some copepods. After the move I decided to go without fish at first to let the copepod population develop. The other day I noticed small white hydroids in different areas of the tank.

I've used Kalk paste which seems to work but I'm afraid I will never get rid of them all. Should I be worried? I've heard that hydroids will often go away on their own but I've also heard they can overrun the system.

Any suggestions for getting rid of them and saving the tank?

Thanks!

Pics a bit blurry. White hydroids tend to go away depending how much nutrients in the water and if u do consistent water changes. Yours from the pic looks to be brown. If u google colonial hydroids, they have the stalk w brown feathery tentacles which take nutrients from water and are photosynthetic. Those are the nasty ones which are dang near impossible to kill. Tweezing releases spores, putty and kalk make the retreat and evenutally burrow out the side. Its the reason i tore down my 1st tank that was overrun and i wound up boiling the rocks and starting over.

I will post a better picture tomorrow when the lighting is better. Almost positive they are the white colonial hydroids. Kalk paste seems to be working. Will they subside eventually? Crazy that these just popped up after a tank move and the removal of all fish. Only thing besides that is the added refugium and chaeto. Assuming they hitched on the chaeto.

Kind of the fence but I would lean towards Hydroids versus Aiptasia. Hydroids feed on small suspended particulate matter, if you broadcast feed too much or too often they will spread. A tank really has to be over fed for them to take over.

I just moved my tank and they started after the move. I've cut back on feeding significantly as well. Should I just continue to hold off on feeding and hit them with Kalk paste as much as I can?
