Last year I started seeing a lot of hydroids on my rocks, but after a few months they subsided. Now they have returned and are getting pretty thick on shaded areas of my rocks. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them other than scrubbing them off with a toothbrush?

Following- I found some hydroids all over a few of my snails... removed them, but concerned it was too late. Haven't seen much yet but keeping an eye out...

I've spent more hours than I'd care to admit researching these. It seems that they come and go in waves. It also seems every, or most tanks has these in one form or another. Stop feeding corals for a while, cover them with paste, and they should die down. But there isn't any sure fire way to handle these it seems.
