Hi everyone

Currently battling an algae issue

Today as I was checking the tank I noticed what looks like hydroids in one of the lost corals. Can someone confirm?
If so, how bad are they? Last time I dealt with it was over 10 years ago on a breeding system.

Thank you all for the help

Yes, hydroids. Manual removal and reduction of feeding and/or discontinue broadcast feeding. Discontinue use of particulate or liquid foods.

Hi 35.
Thanks. How big of a headache do they become normally?
Normally not an issue for me, I have seen them boom in population but just temporarily discontinuing broadcast feeding was enough to reduce their numbers.

same experience here. I dont really think of them until I cause a population jump from over feeding. one time though I had a population explosion, and was trying to figure out how to reduce them. I had an accidental kalk overdose (I left the pump “on” instead of auto) of 20-30 gallons. I was very nervous. I did a 50 gallon water change to try and lower the ph, but you still couldn’t see anything. Between the klir7 and my skimmer (that was fun to clean afterwards) it cleared up in 24 hours. Corals and fish were fine. What I did notice was there were zero hydroids left.

So, the next time I had a population explosion, I dosed the tanks with calcium carbonate. It had the same effect without the PH spike. The downside to this is clean up. After doing this you need to do some maintenance on you pumps and power heads to they don’t lock up from the buildup that happens. So I haven’t kept it up, but if I have an population explosion because of how I feed, I’ll probably do it again and plan for pump maintenance. Actually any thing with a moving part maintenance. Even the Klir rollers got clogged up and had to be soaked in citric acid and scrubbed!

good luck!
