I do plan on buying the hydros controller 4 down the road but could I buy the power strip and use them without the controller?

I bought two of these from Amazon the work with the Hydros or can be used with an app from the power strip

You can use it as a basic powerstrip without the ability to turn things on and off remotely

You would not be able to use them with the app since you have no control unit to pair them with. If you know which brand they are sold under you might be able to link them that way. I am not sure what would happen once you do get a control unit and want to switch them back to Hydros use. Why not just get one of the smaller starter kits such as an XS to use until you get the X4. You can always add the X4 to the one you get and form a collective. You would need a control buss cable and a terminator if you don't get a power pack with one already installed. To do this you would not need to get anything but the X4 unit only, a cable and terminator. Although the X4 starter kit will come with a WiFi strip, pH probe, temp probe and a spare power pack. It is less to get the starter pack than the individual items. You cannot use two power packs unless you use a data only cable. There are units that have there own power supply that can also power the buss and other control units. When using one of these you cannot use the power pack. The power packs are not designed to be used with another power supply. The units with their own supplies can. This includes the Wave Engine.

How do I add a second Power 4 if the two outlets are used by the controller itself and the first Power 4? I need more outlets under the tank.

You can alway use one if these if you don't want to use a standard power strip.
