Who else here thinks the hype threads(by some of the vendors) are just ridiculous. I have noticed alot of corals on here lately that were alot of hype to sell just some average corals. Glad I am not a newbie here. Just wondering if I wa the only one who sees this.

Sure, sometimes there is a lot of hype without much to back it up, but other times there are some mind blowing corals on display. I like being able to look at all the corals and developing my own opinion, and am thankful that R2R allows vendors and reefers alike to show their corals.

I'd much rather have the freedom to either look at those threads or not as opposed to the way some of the other forums out there are run. I actually get entertained looking at some of those vendor hype threads to be honest, how could you not sit there and shake your head and laugh? I truly appreciate that Rev and the mods are much more liberal here and they do a good job policing themselves if you ask me. The vendors essentially have to pay fees to have the right to make those post, where we as members get to browse and post completely for free, so in that regard, I do have the option to look or not to look at those particular vendors post which I know are going to be just hype with lights and which vendors have the goods. Having the option to look or not to look is much better than somebody telling me I can't

I think the sponsors sell some nice stuff, but what kills me are some of the adjectives that they use....Extreme, Ultra Extreme, Sexy, Ultimate, etc.

To me, a strawberry Shortcake frag/colony is a strawberry shortcake frag/colony. Just cause one was held under different lighting or came in a bit brighter than the other doesn't mean its an Ultra Extreme Strawberry Shortcake frag and worth an extra $50.

Yeah but that triples the value ;) lol I agree with you and hope I'm not ever "one of them guys" to everyone haha

On another note if you do have something truly nice and rare it's ok but every single piece isn't the best thing ever and us vendors all have access to the same stuff too and have most of the same stuff it's just all in the picture sometimes right?

Ok it's early on a Saturday I don't even know why I am awake muchless typing a useless response here, I'll go back to sleep now

That is what this board is based on HYPE!

Sorry you feel this way. I like to think our forum is based upon respect, knowledge, and friendship. And of course no place is perfect but we are trying new things to help make this place even better. ;)

I love sweet corals to. Pretty much now about who has the best light combo and best camera and skills with it. I just bored i guess

I agree with Rev. There is HYPE on the board, but the R2R board is not necessarily based on it. There are TONS of discussions on there that have nothing to do with HYPE. I've enjoyed R2R more than any other boards, and enjoy contributing to not only R2R, but to other boards as well.

I can't agree more. It's good topic while dring beers with my reefing buddies. :xd:

the sales person who doesn't tell you something is great is the sales person with no sales. the part that does shock me is the overwhelming amount of gelidium, byropsis & hair algae quite a few of these frags have. who pays for the "most fantastic frag on earth" that is preloaded with the most loathed algaes in our tanks? I don't bother with a second look or sale with those frags

I think its out of control to a point ware some of the marketing strategies are going to backfire. I know for me some of it already has. For example if a vendor keeps trying to push there corals to be tyree to charge a extra arm and leg I turn the other way. If your name is in the coral then what does tyree have to do with it? I think it sounds silly to call a coral tyree LE korndiddy's rainbow paly. If its from kornididdy then why does tyree have his name in it? I also agree with the other example of every coral shouldnt be named ultra or LE, if everything is LE then whats not?

Some great responses. I'm going to put blue LEDs on my sand and sell it as Ultra Rainbow LE Live Sand :)

Its just advertising. If you have product that you want to sell your going to want as any many people to look at it, so you hype it up. TV commercials, bill board ads, even the banners at the top of the page, its all hype to advertise a company or a product. I don't see anything wrong with it, no one is being forced to look.

Just because its something that everybody does still doesn't make it the right thing. For example, I look at these Subway commercials with a sub chock full of meat for a particular sandwich, and then you get there and end up with a premeasured amount of meat, to what looks like a third of what they show on TV.

I agree that if you want to sell, you get better results to hype it up, but blatantly lying about a products looks or contents is just wrong.

This is true but every product? Thats ware it becomes ridiculous. The really nice corals dont need to be hyped, the colors speak for themselves.

Hyping something up is one thing, misrepresenting something is another. If some one is misrepresenting what they sell I hope/don't expect them to keep doing business for long.

I'm one who subscribes to the train of thought "if you don't like it you don't have to look at it, buy it or whatever" And making a whole thread about how much you hate the hype is actually helping the hype. Just my opinion and you know what they say about those.....................

I agree, I've looked at some threads expecting to see some truly remarkable corals only finding myself unimpressed. Its advertising but it not all good advertising.

AND if YOU own something it is yours and YOU can call it WHATEVER you want. Now with that said people can and should make up their own minds as to whether or not they want to buy it based on if they like it or not. If you buy things solely on the purpose that someone else tells you you should then I have A LOT of real estate to sell.........and it's RARE ULTRA LE............LOL!
