Should I use hypo or copper to prevent diseases in my new fish?

I would think, proper diet and water quality would be a better way to prevent diseases. Neither of the two are good for fish..

Since the two most common pathogens are ich and velvet you probably want to use copper for prophylatic or active disease treatment.

Need to know more though, types of fish, is this a quarantine set up?

QT is the best way to prevent disease in your display. I run TTM coupled with prazipro, but keep copper handy if velvet rears it's ugly head.

I know that my display had ich so I removed the fish and want to treat at least for crypto. I like hypo and had success with it. If I had used it on my last addition I would have prevented ich. Now I will treat every new fish.

I have refractometer for hypo, with Cal. Solution. Also have Prazipro.

Also have Cupramine and Coppersafe.
Will have to order the appropriate copper test kit.

I QT all my fish however my last addition came from another reefer and I didn't not treat it for crypto, just used some Prazipro.

copper all the way. Just my opinion and experience of course. Make the best choice for you.

The two big concerns with hypo are that there are ich resistant strains and it is hard to do properly.

Ok so the bottle recommended 16 drops per 10.5 gallons.

I'm going to start with 8drops/10gallons. And repeat every 48 hours until I have reached the recommended levels.

How often will I need to test the Copper level, need to know how many tests I will need.

If you are using cupramine, you want the Seachem copper test. You'll want to test daily at a minimum. If you want to be cautious then test before adding copper and test an hour after adding more. When you have it at .5ppm then you can go back to testing daily to be sure it's staying there.

Ok are we missing anything?

Normal temp, 78-80?

Is a slightly lower salinity ok for Copper treatment? I've read that lower salinity 1.021 can be good for fish.
