True hypo is 1.009 only. The hardest part is keeping it at 1.009 for 30 consecutive days. If you let it creep up then you have to start the 30 day clock over again. I wouldn't go lower than 1.009 either as that can get dangerous for some species. The other problem is that hypo resistant strains of ick have been proven to be out there.

No it's not. I would consider it "low salinity" only. At the store we keep the water in our Fish system at 1.019, not for any medical reasons since it won't do anything at that level, but because that's the salinity that most of the fish we order are shipped in. It makes for an easier and faster transition for the fish. 1.009 is true hypo, anything above that isn't going to be very effective - if at all.

Thanks for clearing that up.
The reason I asked is because I overheard my lfs owner tell a customer who has ick in his tank to drop his salinity down to 1.011 for 30 to 45 days. I thought that was a strange number but I didn't say anything because I wasn't sure if that was accurate advice or not. So now I know. Maybe I'll go back and tell the owner it's 1.009 to truly be effective. Thanks again and have an awesome day. [emoji222]
