I have a new tank up with about 25 fish or so and my qt failed me and I know have ich in the tank. I haven't yet added coral and was wondering if starting hypo in the display is a bad idea. For cuc there are only about 20 or so snail I could transfer to my old tank that is housing my corals.

The rock was cycled for 4 months prior so I shouldn't have any ammonia issues there.

The tank is a redsea 750xxl.

You should be fine going hypo in your DT. But your old tank will have the parasites in with the corals and will need to be "fallow" for 76 days.

That tank is currently fishless so I imagine I'll be killing 2 birds with one stone

Also the tank is bare bottom so there shouldn't be any die off there.

I'm mostly just scared of the bio filter crashing from the lowered salinity.

Anyone have any input on the filter?
Your biofilter should mostly hang in there, get a few bottles of biospira to add bacteria and an ammonia alert badge. You will usually see the fish start breathing heavy if ammonia creeps up before the alert badge shows anything so watch them closely, the biospira is quick to get the levels down.

I'd be concerned about any algae or unknown critters (bristleworms) etc dying during hypo and creating an ammonia spike. If you are sure there are none of those, this is a plan. The biofilter should be fine. Bacteria is pretty resilient.

The ich can ride on the backs of your snails, so those need to stay in their quarantine for 76 days. Put that quarantine in another room if you can.

There might be a few bristle worms and ill probably miss a few snails but i figure in a 200g total volume that shouldn't be that big a deal. I have some prime for emergency and I am making some additional water for a quick water change if needed.
