good night, today i realized that one of my fish has ictio, i decided to remove all the fish, and put it in the sump, and disconnect the sump from the aquarium, to make hyposalinity in the sump only. and corals and invertebrates in normal sump, has anyone done this? should I leave the skimmer on in the sump?

The skimmer wont do much of anything (when it comes to foam) in hypo without the normal SG of saltwater.

Is this a large sump? Are you planning on wiping out the Ich then replacing, or just treating them till they look better and placing them back in DT?

The Skimmer will actually work. Usually it takes a sg of at least 1.006 or so for them to work at all. As you increase the salinity, they will become more effective though. Generally speaking, the higher the density the smaller the bubbles that can be produced by a pump assembly..(fill a skimmer with fresh water and you'll see what i mean) With low density, bubbles are large and as you increase density you compress the same volume of air into a smaller volume. So the overall density of bubbles you can create for a given volume increases as you raise salinity.

the sump has 50 liters, 5 fish, my idea is to treat the ichthyos with hyposalinity, and leave the main aquarium 3 months without fish, after that I return with the fish to the aquarium

Got it, I'll leave it on then and follow ...

But the skimmer in the sump is useless for filtration for the main tank because they are not connected.
yes, but would the skimmer in the main tank really be necessary? since there will be no fish or fish food ... besides I think about doing 10% water replacement a week ....

Are you running your hypo at true 1.008-1.009 ich killing level, or just dropping it a few points to help treat the fish?

Regardless of what others are telling you, I can tell you from actual experience that a skimmer does little to nothing at true (1.008-1.009) hypo...

You might want to setup a true QT for that length of time, seems like a long time to keep 5 fish in the sump...

I will lower the salinity from 1025 to 1009 in two days, and leave it for 20 days to treat all the fish, although I only saw ichthy in 1, probably the others are contaminated as well ....

I would break it up over like 3 days to play it safe. Fish can handle the drops pretty easily, but there’s anecdotal evidence to suggest that going too low too fast can shock and kill your beneficial bacteria.
