If you using a brine refractometer to measure sg = 1.009, there’s no perfect solution, either calibrating with 35 ppt or ro/di. Both Will be off, but both are probably close enough. If I had to pick, I’d use ro/di

Fir hypo use please stay away from Milwaukee or other digital. I strongly suggest u use only the hand helds.
My Milwaukee was Off quite a bit. I then purchased two hand helds and bottles of calibration at 35ppt. Just my 2 cevts wirth. But if you are off. Below 1.009. You will see some really strange Fish behavior. I have been through it. Sirt about spelling. Hand held phone response. Either way just watch your fish.

Got ya on the Milwaukee. I can't believe how far it is off. now on to Using a handheld Calibrated with 25ppt = 1.009 Calibrate with Distilled 0 = 1.011
I have not seen much difference in the fish and now im going with the Distilled Calibration.

Miss type Calibrated with 25ppt = 1.009xxxxxxx Calibrated with 35ppt = 1.009

Interesting posts above. My Milwaukee seems to be pretty accurate, provided it is calibrated regularly. Even for hypo, it's within the margin of error for my optical refractometer.

what is your milwaukee reading compared to your refactometer. Mine was quite off. Even after I calibrated the miwaukee

Right now, I'm treating for capsalids in QT, so I'm running at 14ppt according to my refractometer. Milwaukee shows 13 or 14.

Well the latest update is. All of my fish are clear of ICH. Lost a few also but everyone seams to be doing great. I have my salinity at 1.008

I know copper and hypo is a no no, but can you use antibiotics while doing hypo?

I've never done it myself, but know many who have used various antibiotics in conjunction with hypo. ;)

i have tried cupramine with salinity at 1.008 with no side effects. In fact, it is easier on the fish since you do not have to shoot for 0.5 ppm as there are more cupramine ions in the water, making it effective at lower concentration. Hypo also reduces the number of parasites, thus a better chance of treatment being effective when combined with copper.

Haha.. Dude I'm a space cadet sometimes. I JUST did kanaplex and hypo like a month ago for my perc for a possible infection after flukes.

Got a few fish in QT, still scratching. At this stage, I'm positive that I'm only dealing with flukes and not ich/velvet so I'm doing Hypo to treat prazi-resistant flukes. Do I need to go as low as 1.011 or 1.009? Thank you.

I shoot for 1.009 so I've got extra flexibility. 1.011 is technically all you need to do though

Hi All,

I've been talking to an LFS source and they treat their fish at 1.009. I've never done hypo before as I prefer other methods, but how would I work with this? Do I match the salinity when the fish go into QT and then slowly rise it up? It's much easier for me to do my other treatments at 1.025 instead of hypo so I would prefer to rise up to 1.025 then reset the clock from there. Can you Prazi during the salinity ramp up period?

How quickly can I get them to 1.025?

I wouldn’t raise more than .002 per day. And I would spread that out - morning & evening. You can safely lower salinity on fish more rapidly than you can raise it.
