I used to have black sponge in my old tank.
The whole sponge was smooth. No visible holes to be seen and it looked almost shiney.

I'm still thinking it's a sponge. Did it just pop up over night? Or did it take a few weeks (months) to spread?

Took a while before I noticed but that goes for the sponges I have also
