I’m confused?

Hi I’ve been trying to figure out to get a sump incorporated to my tank. Just confused on how a overflow box works? It takes water in and sends it to the sump. I know you need a return pump to get water back into the tank from the sump. But where does the return pump lead to? Back to the overflow box or a separate outlet pipe into the tank?

Separate part of the tank, preferably, away from the overflow box.
