I’m stuck - what should I do ?

I like that idea. It seems like it might work, as the problem is really in one are (where there is less flow. I tried a powerhead but it didn’t do much and it was annoying corals).

I’m in Canada and can’t get that sand though. Only « live sand » from bags sitting on shelves for months, even years. I wonder if regular sand would do ?

Also, this is the spot where my tiger pistol shrimp lives so I don’t know how long it will be before she disturbs the new sand…


This is something I did also for the first type I had. Maybe I should try it again. I do have filter floss in the filter but it doesn’t get changed everyday for sure.

I just blasted mine at lights out and had the floss on the clip blowing in the tank. Every morning it was covered in dinos (ostreopsis) like a moth to a flame. Got rid of them in 3 or 4 days but I caught it fairly early.

Not in 20 years have I seen fixation come and go at night in a 2 year old tank. I'm not expert, I'm a fledgling hobbyist who had a long bad start in this hobby but it's come together for me.in the last 10 years. If this fellow gets out a microscope we are going to find out it's dinos, I suspect.

I will tomorrow, now that everyone is trying to help me. I’ll post the results when done.

Well yes, diatoms like some dinos are light dependent so they disappear at night into the sand. They are photosynthetic.

I don't doubt she has dinos either because she mentioned ID from microscope prior.

Ok, so I took a sample and checked it under microscope. There are dinos, as I thought. They look the same as what I had last time, that never completely went away.

You never posted what your complete current parameters are? What is light schedule and spectrum?

I'm not sure why you think weekly water changes are bad either promoting dinos? You siphon the dinos out during water change or you can just siphon the water into a sock with floss and let water stay in the tank too.

Ok numbers are decent except mag is high. What's your light set up and schedule. Tank does not look bad at all in video.

Yeah, I kept dosing mag when it was fine because of a faulty test. It’s hard to lower it without doing a WC.

Ok aside from the dinos you said you are not getting coral growth and trouble with euphyllia. Have you par checked your lights? I was shocked to find out how low par my radions were at 70% intensity. Now I'm at 100% intensity with significant coral growth.

Have you considered a conch or goby to plow that sandbed for you?

I haven’t checked par yet. It’s something I need to do.

I already have a conch but no goby. I’ve read conflicting opinions about gobies. Some people say they’re really bad because of all the sand blasting so I’m not sure. I almost bought one last week.

I decided I’ve had enough and although I’m against using chemical products in aquaria in general, I just ordered Dino X. I mean it’s a last resort solution and I’ve been trying to get rid of dinos for more than a year, so I think it’s time…

I'd rent a par meter and see what your numbers are. Good luck with dino x. Often we hear from members here who try chemical treatments and they get past one problem but open the door for additional problems. If you don't identify what the source of your issue is then it's likely to return as you mentioned you beat dinos once but they came back...good luck
