I'm sure all of us have had the day or 2 when we almost gave up everything and shut it down. What caused you to almost give up the hobby?

For me it was having my 3 separate systems all crashing at the same time and losing all my coral.

I too had a system crash, an alk crash to be exact. Never again will i blindly dose.

I had a devastating outbreak of velvet that wiped out my very expensive wrasse collection. The loss was heartbreaking but the hit to the wallet was a bitter pill to swallow. I spent a couple months with a fallow tank wondering if I wanted to try again. I'm glad I did though, I can't imagine not having my reef tank now.

I had some equipment fail and just about called it quits. Really expensive to replace a reef keeper, two wave makers, and 1 Kessil light. Thank goodness for Kessils awesome customer service and they shipped me a brand new one. Then I realized how much $ I had invested in my 215 over a 12 year span and quickly changed my mind.

Seeing anything die always makes me want to. Even the tiniest creatures I know only have a lifespan of a year.
Otherwise I constantly find myself wanting to quit the forums lol.. People want to argue opinions vs looking for data or doing experiments. Pretty depressing since the collective knowledge in the hobby progresses so slowly, but I guess that explains it. I understand now why Dr. Tim, and several other phd's with products don't visit the forums.
I especially laugh when people shut down their tanks and then continue to preach on the forums.

I agree. Watching things die, especially fish is tough for me!

I also had a Kessil die, just over a year old. Had the same awesome experience with Kessil's customer service. Sent a brand new unit.

Lost the whole tank during hurricane sandy and took a little break. It was tough looking at all that hard work down the drain. I'm having some issues with my tank now and I'm very frustrated with it. I actually sent my fiancé a text about an hour ago telling her I think I'm going to break the tank down for a while. Between the frustration I'm having right now and not having much time it's hard for me to justify keeping it going much longer.

I'm actually pulling myself up and out now. I really contemplated it for a bit. But, working to get the tank setup, good equipment (not neccessarily top of the line), then just to have a massive outbreak of algae only to tear it down and start again. Worse is I don't even have a idea of where or how the algae began or came from.

I am starting over as well had to take mine down because of velvet killed everything it's hard to find healthy fish seems like anyone no where to buy fish from someone you trust?

ALk crash, mag crash, velvet killed all my fish, and final a hair algae out break that i'm still dealing with. This was all in the same tank lol.
