So for the last several weeks my some of my zoas have not been opening and I couldn’t understand why. All water parameters were in check and salinity was at 1.026 with a refractometer. Or so I thought. Today I picked up a Hanna salinity checker and much to my surprise when I checked the tank it read 1.021. Checked several times to make sure also checked my other tank which uses same water and got the same reading. I then added some to a cup and raised salinity more and checked with all three measuring devices. The Hanna and my old hydrometer read the same and the refractometer was way off again. So now I am convinced my refractometer was off which was supposedly calibrated with .35 solution. I am now slowly raising salinity to 1.025 to save my zoas who looked mad and even “melting”. So once again I am grateful for this Hanna salinity checker it may have saved some of my corals.!
