I bought the wrong Lugols, can I still use it?

I wanted to get an iodine and saw a lot about Lugols so I looked it up on Amazon and bought what came up. I think I got the wrong thing, can I still use it?

Hopefully someone else chimes in, but as far as I understand it will be the same thing other than can have different concentrations. So if you are using instructions for something like Brightwell Aquatics Lugols solution you would have to make sure the concentration is the same and adjust accordingly.

So basically look at the difference in % concentration and do a little math comparison to an actual iodine dip and I should be good?

I believe so, but dont take my word for it without someone else who is a bit more confident. I just wanted to make sure you check the concentrations before using it. I believe 2% is actually a pretty low concentration compared to some of the others.

Yeah i think most others are 5% or lower after federal regulations shut down the higher concentration. But I’ll wait to see if someone else responds and if anything I’ll call my LFS and see if they have some of the right stuff lol

I'm not a huge fan of Lugols for dosing, but you can just dose more and get the same effect as less of the more concentrated versions.

Not a fan because it is a largely unnatural form for seawater, it is a reactive oxidizer, and it may alter the types of trace elements in the tank.

I've often wondered if the "effects" that people report may be unrelated to the actual iodine dosed, but rather to some other effect that adding an oxidizer causes.

I’m not planning on dosing it, just wanted it for a dip for my zoas. I’m a big believer in not dosing stuff you can’t test for. And if I’m right I’m pretty sure ESV 2-part(what I use) provides most trace elements in small amounts. IMO as long as my tank and corals are looking good and growing what’s the point in changing stuff up

besides that... so say the actual coral dip iodine is 5% and mine is 2% I’d want to use 2.5x more for my dip right?

I think Lugols is for coral dipping, even though some dose iodine with it.
