I have tried everything and I cannot seem to grow chaeto in my refugium. I have done a lot of research and nothing has seemed to work so far. I have a 4" sand bed and some live rock in there. I have the kessil H380 over the refugium. My chaeto just ends up being real stringy falling apart or kind of chalky. I started adding Chaeto grow to make up for the lack of nutrients as I have 0 phosphates but nothing seems to work. Anybody had similar luck and found something that works?
P.S. I get my chaeto from Algeabarn.

yeah I get that, and I just realized there is another thread just like this below that I can follow along. I guess it's not a bad thing that I cannot grow chaeto. I just have a small outbreak of hair algae I was hoping the chaeto might help with.

I cant grow chaeto, so I dose vibrant
Cheers! Mark

Your hair algae is sucking up your phosphates before the chaeto can get it. You need to manually remove most of it first and try some other treatments to rid your tank of the hair algae. Then, when it starts getting dirty again - try the chaeto.

Wonder if you took a mesh bag and filled it with frozen food or any food, placed it in your Chaeto, wonder if that would just start it.

That's actually kind of a cool idea. Like, feed the sump and starve the DT of nutrients so the macro algaes can take the nutrients from the water instead of the hair algae. Only problem I could think of for that would be that the fish might get hungry.
That is a very interesting idea, though!

I like that idea. I may try it. I have been working on this hair algae for months and cannot seem to completely get rid of it. I have been running 0 phosphates and nitrates for months and hasn't gotten rid of it entirely. I have been using vibrant too and it is kind of working but just hasn't kicked it all.

Simply cut them a very small portion of it then, it’s like paying taxes all over again!haha

I think you could certainly grow it that way. Bet you could just put it in your filter cups/bags.
