if it is blooming after water changes, i woudl suggest stop the changes for a while, or spread them out more. it looks like a mix of different bryposisand hair algae and maybe some cyno. when it blooms it just going ot cause it to spread more, if it only blooms after water changes, i would stop them! also another thought to help elimanate the food for the algae would be to maybe dose vodka or some other form of bacteria that will help consume the algae's food. im dosing 2cc's on our 120gal tank with 25gal sump, nitrates sit at about 5 and i daily and heavy, wife feeds before i get home then dont tell me when i get home lol.

Not a huge fan of carbon dosing I think it has it's place but in a sense it's kind of a band aid for a problem ! The algae deosnt strictly bloom after water changes but have noticed it blooms a little after them trace elements/ nutrients that were getting low replenished maybe?

how much flow is behind the rocks? is ther a chance things are setteling behind them and breaking down causing the nutrient problem feeding the algea?

I had dinos and it looked pretty similar sorry to say. Fortunately I completely got rid of it with hydrogen peroxide dosing. I would stop messing around and try to get a real ID on what you have. I spent so much time and effort trying to get rid of bryopsis and GHA (which is what many people said I had) before I found out it was actually dinos. I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying find out what it is, you could just be trying to put a bandaid on a headache!

Here in MN we don't have many college bio labs that will spend time IDing reef tank algae

I run the tunze almost at the bottom running behing rocks not much settles in DT with the flow I have! that I know of anyway I run BB also have few inches of sand in fuges

yea... hmm honestly though i have heard a lot of peopel having problems with agaes like this and then stop doing water changes for a while and it kicks it... but i would check your water and salt water for phosphates and make sure your not leaching from somewhere. containers have been known to do it

I think I have read that about containers Before which I should look into some more mine is a cheaper brand I mix my saltwater in...

I like your system, and you seem to be a very good aquarist. The system will come back, we all suggest from what we know and what worked for us in the past. It does not mean it will work for you, and the reason is you case may different from mine or others. Looking at your setup I can suggest the following:
1. The skimmer seems to be small take a second look at it.
2. The lighting over the fuge I don’t like, you need strong water flow in the fuge and 55-100w 10k bulbs, later you may reduce wattages. Leave the lighting 24/7 on, I know others may suggest the algae needs to be dark a bit but I disagree.
3. Before changing the skimmer try zeobac and zeo start, it will improve your skimming 3x

Feeding, lighting, all else looks perfect, rocks are ok, remember the branch rock will have more algae because is very porous. But that’s the best rock you can get.

And last hang in there, you are very close.

Skimmer is rated at 180 gal so just a hair over as I'm at about 155 total water volume ! It's the super reef octopus xp2000 come skimmer with bubble blaster pump

The sump lights are 2 65 watt spirals I think 6500k! What type of bulbs do you recomend like t-5 ? Thanks 4 the compliments on the system and the advice given so far ! I totally understand the fact that no 2 tanks are the same seen it many times first hand that's 4 sure lol part the fun right? The knowledge to this lifestyle is never ending after 8-9 years in salt tanks of various styles I still have questions and learn new info everyday ! In the past few years being involved with forums I have learned and excelled the most in short I don't think I'm trowin in the towel anytime soon 4 surely go down fighting

2x65w 6.5k seems ok, I would much rather use 10k but the 6.5k is close enough. How does the skimmer perform, do you get allot output? Color of waist, could you open the skimmer and post a photo? I am leaning towards bacteria being insufficient in your system, and towars leave everything alone and try some zeobac and zeo start.

Yeah it helps if you went to school there or know someone at a local school. But an ID would definitely help fight the battle. I'm sure you'll get there, figuring out what works is the frustrating part. Good luck with it!

Skim mate is a dark brown almost black and it literally smells like death and Ducey combined lol
