So newbie my tank isn't even here yet (Red Sea 350 Deluxe). I have been ordered a protein skimmer, heater, chiller, current motors, salt. I plan on getting my (black) live sand from the beach across the street. I have just been reading about water treatment, and it seems like reverse osmosis water is required. Also, it takes two weeks to fully integrate the salt into the water before adding to the tank. Obviously I need a holding tank for water changes. I had no plan for that. I live in Hawaii, so the ambient temperature should eliminate the need for a heater in MY MIXING TANK ! What do you folks recommend for a mixing/holding tank ?

I wouldn't say that it takes two weeks to mix the salt. I only have a 40B but I usually mix it up one day and use it the next. I think it really only needs a few hours to mix.

First, welcome to R2R!

Yes you do need to make your own RODI or buy it.

Salt mixes in less than a day:)

Not sure of the source, but absolutely not true, unless I'm not understanding what you are saying. I've always mixed salt until clear (anywhere from 10minutes to an hour depending on salt) and then used it, with no ill effects.

Absolutely considered that.
I would think that saltwater straight from tropical reef would be best, assuming that it does not contain any contaminants like sunblock. And btw, congratulations on living in paradise! Its been less than a year since I have been to Hawaii and I miss it. Welcome to R2R!
