I try to use the least amount of live rock I can....
In my 16 foot long by 40" wide system 400+ gallons had only 200 lbs in it..

One of my first tanks.. 8' long and 32" wide. This was more of a "C" shaped rock pile but still only ran 120-140 lbs of live rock. This tank was 200 gallons. Ha it is funny looking at my old systems....

My rule of thumb when aquascaping is to try to keep one side heavier than the other when building the rock structure. Then build height with SPS or LPS like acro's or simple to care for leathers and
Gorgonians. goniopora can work as well. The LPS works well as it is quick to place as the acro's grows in.
I also am now using coral like zoanthids as more of a "live Rock".. You can buy huge colonies for a decent price they make a great background coral.
