I have a unique problem

So I just built my D&D Jump Guard. Aside from pulling the mesh too tight (need to redo it), I have found that the weir in my planet 120 hits the jump guard rail before allowing the lip to sit flat against the glass. My first thought was to sand down the jump guard rail but a buddy said that may weaken the rigidity of the rail. So now I am considering using my milwaukee cordless soldering iron and melting down a small section of the weir wall where the rail touches it. Does anyone have a better idea or any reason the soldering iron idea won’t work. I chose the iron idea over a dremel or other sanding/grinding method to keep acrylic out of the tank as the melted plastic can just be picked off.

Keep in mind that the melting plastic can potentially release toxic fumes. Not sure how that'll translate into the fish tank but just a caution.

I would tape a towel or piece of cardboard under it and use a coping saw .
