Things are starting to happen. I noticed this morning I had brown spots on rock and sand. I know this is part of the process. How long to they stay around? Water is looking good ammonia-0, nitrite-0, nitrate-60. Did a 10 gallon water change and will probably do another 10-15 this weekend. Also, going to cut my lights back some.

Couple weeks, it depends on how much silica there is...fortunately, I think diatoms are one of the shortest blooms and easiest to clean away!

Wow, totally funny.
My 29 gallon bio cube about a week or so old just developed the same brown spots.
Yesterday I got some snails and a few other cleaners.
I too need to cut back on the lighting.

I couldn't help myself once the water cleared up I wanted to look at it all the time. Since it was empty I just let them go. Now I have to put them on a timer. Going to get some kind of clean up crew on the next few days since they have something to eat now.

Try some rowa phos and check for phosphate it may help I have seen Brown diotom last for months In a friends tank he couldn't get rid of it but most of the time it's a few weeks and the rowa phos May have it gone in a few days it worked for me

Test the water for phosphate levels and if you have phosphate levels then buy some and stick it in a bag should last a few months and its like $20
