I just learned that corals can be dyed.

Yesterday, I learned that you can dye corals. People don't like dyed corals, though. Why is dyeing corals bad? Is it because the dye is bad for the health of the coral? Is it because the coral is sort of fake or artificial?

I believe this was a thing many years ago. Yes, the dye is bad for the corals. The dye also fades. I do think they actually look worse/fake... to me personally anyways.

The only thing I've heard of that was similar was a way to extract some of the internal bacteria and modify it genetically and reinject it and get different colors out

I'll put my grumpy old man hat on now, if you want something that isn't real get fake coral and make it whatever color you want. Don't harm/kill living things to do it.

They do it with fish and anemones. So I’d imagine they’d try it with coral. Terrible thing

Hey guys, how do you know if a coral is dyed to be a different color? I'm talking dyed LPS coral with hard skeletons. Are there any signs a dyed coral has and can you test if there's dye present in tissue? I think I purchased a dyed coral.
