I am subscribing to this thread, I am in the same position. I have a $500 budget, and really just want to take good macro shots.
Have been looking at some older cannons, found this one on craigslist, any feedback on it?

I am willing to sell these separate or as a bundle. All in excellent working condition.
Canon EOS XS Body Only $200
Canon 18-55 IS Lens $100
Canon 55-250 IS Lens $150

Just saw this posted for black friday, would it work for taking nice pictures of corals?

I saw this too but I ended up getting the T3i Rebel 18MP with 18-55 and 55-250 mm lens. I was reading that the 75-300mm are very, very old and crappy. But im still a newb...

Sell that 55-250 and get a Macro lens, you will NEVER use that 55-250, it is probably the worst lens ever made!
