I need a lil guidance

I will tell you what worked for me.....
I had GHA. Bad. So I pulled each rock and scrubbed it then put them back after I rinsed with rodi water. Bad mistake. got a cyano outbreak from all the dying GHA. was at my wits end. nothing worked. Until I did this:
1. bought a spectra pure RODI unit - got tired of relying on LFS water that was "RODI". But it has a PO4 of .75 yes I tested it.
2. Started using BRS high capacity GFO.
3. took some of the red spectrum out of my LED current IC lights.
within 1 week zero cyano, and within 2 weeks zero GHA. its been that way now for quite some time. its actually been LESS maintenance than before.

Tagging Along have some of the same issiues with phosphates and not doing enough water changes.

Hello again guys, another question. I am thinking of dumping the bodge job off using the eheim canister filter and replacing with a proper stand alone media reactor. I would like to run rowa carbon and nyos phos-x,
My question is can I mix the two together or will I need 2reactors one for each.

I’ve seen people mix the bulk reef supply stuff but as am in the uk it’s not cost effective to use it.
Assuming it’s safe to mix, is cost effective to do so, am I going to end up throwing away a load off good phos remover because the carbon is spent.
Anyone had any experience here?

Hi please feel free to add to the discussion the more I can learn the better.
I’ve been given some great tips already.

So far I still have algie issues but it’s not spreading as fast as it once was glass cleaning time seems to be reducing?
This is the way I gage the progress lol

Carbon needs to be compacted to work best. If it tumbles it falls apart.

Gfo works best tumbled so that all sides are repeatedly exposed to the water so it binds stuff more as it comes in contact with it.

In a canister of the gfo is mostly flat in the bag the water makes its way over and around most of it.

Update..
It’s been a month since I started this thread thought I would give a update as to where am at for anyone else that may read in the future,
So the task was to get rid off all the brown algie that was taking over my pride joy. The sand and rocks where absolutely caked in the stuff.
Today the rocks are clean and I have a few minor patches of brown in the sand.

Now it’s bought to my attention it was due to hi phos. A reading of 0.5 on a api test kit ( which doesn’t really say much)
First thing I did was upgrade my cheap second hand eBay skimmer to a bubble magus curve 5,
The difference in skim and the colour was dramatically different.
Next I dosed Red Sea nopox at half the recommended dose (advised by Red Sea)
Everyday I would take a turkey baster and blast a section of the rock work, the brown algie didn’t seem to stick it jus sat on top of the liverock.
A week or so later I added a D-D phos reactor and switched my phos media from seachem to nyos phosx,
Today my phos reads 0-0.25 (api test kits read 0-0.25, 0.5, 1.0....etc)
My corels are making a great recovery zoas are really open now. I lost my Duncan’s in the process and 2 gobys which really upset me to be honest. But the tank looks well.
IMO it was the new skimmer and phos reactor that’s made the difference nopox and switching phos media may have helped but the jury’s put on that one.

Anyway thanks for all who posted, an good luck to anyone reading.
P.s
Today’s my 1 year reefing anniversary whoohoo.
