Hey all -

I have a 55 gallon cadlights artisan set up. I need a new return pump from my sump. It's just too loud and it's too big so we've had to dial it back.

Thoughts on type and how many gallons per hour?

Looking for quiet but not break the bank.

Eheim are great pumps for your tank.
Get one like that pushes close to 600 gallons, not sure what model we looking at.

Go with an Eheim 1260. It's quiet and will last forever. And, if it's not quite enough flow, you can swap out the volute and magically have a 1262 for $10 or so. IME, DC pumps(well, pump in my case as I learned my lesson quick), absent the insanely expensive ones, are not reliable enough. Yes, you'll find someone who has run a jebao or something for 2-3 years. If you're lucky you can find someone who has run one for 4-5 years. Easy to find Eheim, Tunze, and Sicce pumps that have been running for 10+ years. No as easy as finding jebao's that only ran a year or less before quitting. And the Eheim, Tunze, and Sicce pumps aren't expensive either.

Another thing on the Jebao, Waveline, Speedwave, whatever; their flow rates are nowhere near advertised. But that's easily fixed right? Just buy larger and then since it's controllable you can dial it down! Except, by the time you buy the larger "cheaper" DC pump you are at or near the price of a quality AC pump. Just my .02.

I just got rid of my magdrive 500 because it got loud after having it for 3 years. I replaced it with a sicce syncra silent. It is extremely quiet and was only 50 bucks at my lfs

The DCT pumps are good. I have a DCT 3000 and 4000 and they both have been reliable and quiet. I'm about to go to a RODC 5500 to run my return and manifold.

Second the Eheim votes. I have Eheim pumps and filters that are old enough to drive, vote, and drink. I've run them dry for hours on accident without any negative repercussions. The only issue is to proceed carefully when cleaning the impeller as the ceramic shaft can be delicate. You won't be disappointed.

A return pump is the most critical piece of equipment of your tank. Don't go cheap, untested or on a whim.

When I set up my 60 I bought a Rio 2500 from my LFS. It's been cleaned once in just under a yr of operation and is completely silent and has plenty of flow.

Gratend 1yr isn't a real test of time but so far so good.

I've been running a jebao dc3000 for three years now, it was the return pump for my 55 and now its the manifold pump on my 120. I had my sump in the basement and it pumped around 250 gph up 9 ft and it has run perfectly silent for a year now without the ceramic bushing on the back of the impeller, broke it trying to get it off. Die hard pump for a great price.
