I need a sump?

Necessary is a strong word.
But we use them to increase a water volume and to house equipment, so that it’s not cluttering up the view.

A cursory search on what a sump is will give you more information.

Happy reefing. :)

As stated above, a sump is not necessary; it is an item used for convenience and to keep your display free of unsightly equipment. You can make them as simple or as complicated as you want to fit your needs. You can use the sump for a place to keep a refugium for nutrient export, keep reactors, socks to collect detritus, skimmers, heaters, probes, dosing lines, and a whole myriad of other do-dads.

Thanks every one I need to look into better...

I just added a sump after many years. I kept adding on things and got really tired of seeing equipment hanging on the back and sides of my DT. Not to mention multiple probes and heaters. Took me a long time to make the move and very happy with it. Tank is old and never drilled so had to go with a HOB skimmer Box but works great. Not to mention the in sump skimmers are just so much better than the HOB ones.
