It looks kind of like a Pineapple sponge. (harmless) These usually show up in abundance at first, but as time goes by and the tank matures the population tends to decline.

Thanks cloak. Does it have any purpose in the aquarium?

It basically just filters out nutrients from the water, which is a good thing, but you need to have a TON of these things to see any real changes. Definitely a welcome addition though. GL.
