Hello. Well were do I start. My wife loves me. Lol. She bought me a 150 gal used saltwater tank about 8 months ago. She knows I love them. So USED. It's like at least 8 years old Mybe more. Lol. So I have had it up and running since then. Worried about all the talk about cycling. I have snails and hermit crabs in it. A month ago my Daughter in law buys me a lion fish. Oh so now it's on. I have to give this guy or girl the best. So I need to upgrade some things and have no idea what were when. I know I need a protein skimmer. I don't have one. Ext to int. I don't know. I really have no room in my sump. But if I upgrade the 2 rio 3100 in it I will have room for something. I don't know. All the 1inch or so pipes need changing for the over flow down to sump. I keep calling it a sump. I have no idea. Wet/dry filter. How is that. lights suck. Lol. It does hold water. Live rock. Some looks fake. Help. We're do I start. Hello.

So I want to start with buying a protein skimmer. Anyone have a idea on a great one for a 150. External and I will need to buy a external pump to pump it also. Any ideas please and thank you

Depending on your in sump return pump, you could build a manifold to suply water to the external skimmer; if it's not strong enough, take a look at the Reflow brand external pumps, they make the best external pumps. I'm a big fan of ReefOctopus skimmers; you can find most of their products from Bulkreefsupply.com and premiumaquatics.com

I would recommend replacing the sump that came with the tank with a larger one.
I know it is not a fun purchase but having the extra space will open up more options for equipment that will make keeping your tank easier.
Whatever sump you end up choosing make sure the dimensions are such that you can maneuver it into position under your stand before you purchase it

Once you have that look for a quality skimmer making sure the dimensions are small enough (including height) to fit.
