That's not much "brown stuff" man. Are you going to add more rocks to the tank? I would get them in there if so. How long did it take for this algae bloom? You can clean all the brown stuff of the tank and sand when water changing. Growth is good! It can be a pain sometimes, but better than everything dying.

I just cleaned it it's been set up for about 6 months I was looking for ideas on what I need to do to it I tested my pH and it was around 7.8 or so do I need to get it up if so how do I do that

What kind of rock and how much I would like to run a reef tank just not sure what I need to do that!!

A lot of people say 1lbs per gallon, you can decide if you want live or what I consider dead rock, it's called dry rock normally. There are benefits to both. With live rock your tank will be ready much quicker, with dry rock it will take a lot longer time to get going but you won't have any bad creature coming with it and sometimes if you let the live rock go too long out of water it will start dying which will cause an ammonia spike possibly. That's why you should probably get the rock in now instead of adding later. Either way getting dry or live in early is better than later IMO. I don't know where you live but be careful if you go the live rock route, I'm from Wisconsin and the stores there had great live rock. Down in Florida it is either great and pricey, or basically dry rock that sat in a big tank for a couple weeks. Nice purple chunks are possibly the easiest way to spot good live rock, I look for other goodies on it also. Good luck I just got a tiny CUC (clean up crew) to help with my brown stuff and green growing algae.

Good info I live in Georgia I thought about getting another 40 pounds in there thought about getting dead rock I saw some kind of food for rock to get it growing bacteria faster
Filtration I have a emperor 400 and a rena star xp2 is that good enough or do I need to add some stuff

Welcome home, you'll love it here!

Some good advice already given!

the ultra minimalist aquascape.

....2 pieces of rubble.
you might want to add a couple more on the other side at least. but its your tank.

as far as the diatoms, vacuum sand or get a conch/yellow headed goby

your 2 pieces of rock and glass... couple of astrea snails.

gl

that might be enough to max out the bioload though /sarc

I'm new to this lol not sure what to do to get a good tank

ever play legos?

get 25 lbs more rock and have fun :)

if i were to get away with only 2 pieces of rubble, my sump or cannister would be nothing but seachem matrix

I have a damsel and a yellow golby that came with a grab that stays under the sand if I get a clean up crew what would u get when you talk about bioload what are you saying

in salt water land, our rock is the main filter. not a sponge or filter. the bacteria living on the rock make it all nice and clean.

Ok have you heard or used aby of that rock food it is supposed to help grow bacteria faster?

Your live rock and live sand will do the most to keep tank balanced with the bacteria. I had a similar filtration set up on a tank like yours so you should be safe on filtration, but you are on the low end for sure both bio and filtration if you get into certain corals. Putting a power head or 2 wouldn't hurt either.

yes. i personally use dr tims one and only.
i have had limited success with biospira.
the others dont work ime
