I need quiet!!! help please

My reef octopus skimmers are both pretty quiet so they are a good choice. Also look at the reef octopus line with the dc pumps that should cut more noise as well. I love my octopus skimmers so I think you will be happy with the classic (which I use) or the dc pump version.

Thanks guys! I'll be talking to the manager at the store to see what all we can get in and the prices (my price) for each of the ones yall mentioned. I really appreciate the incites into these different skimmers. :D

Just to be clear I wasn't trying to knock reef octopus skimmers I just don't have any experience with them in recent years so I could only offer advice on products currently on the market as I'm sure pumps on the reef octopus has changed since I used them.

I have had great luck with the Reef Octopus NWB 150 and 200.

Skimmers inject air into water to create bubbles, that process has a certain amount of noise inherrent in it. Generally, when I have found skimmers to be getting loud, a good vinegar cleaning, and air entrainment orifice brushing usually quiets things down. Likewise, if the pump on the skimmer is getting older, or bearings are going, they can get loud...

I have the reef octopus classic 150. Its pretty quiet. I have their hob skimmer on my other tank and that is a lot noisier.

Well I have owned many skimmers over the years and the Reef Octopus classic 150 is a awesome skimmer. They are well built, reasonably priced and pull a ton of scuz out of the water. The pump is great and the needlewheel is really a great design. They also have a great warrantee and are built extremely well. Not sure if the newer 150 comes with a transforce pump, but its a really good little pump. I think if you dont want to tinker with it all the time I would recommend it.
The Sedra pumps got really crappy on the ASM's. The impeller swells up and cracks. JUNK!!

Using the classic 152-S ReefOctopus and it's working flawlessly it's about 260 brand new or you could try one of the new skimz 145sc or 165sc octa skimmers(just looked.. Yikes pricey..) I prob would have tried one but I got a great package deal with mine

Edit: Oh seen the post above me I think the 152-S is the new version and like he said it's pretty solid works extremely well I couldn't imagine something could work much better

Try looking into the Bubble Magnus Curve. I have been using the curve 5 for about two years and it is also in my living room on my 150G and it is quiet and works great. I think any protein skimmer with those air intake silencer would work to quite it down. With that said you can probably find one and add it to your current skimmer and it should work so long as it is not one of the old waterfall skimmer.

If its the motor that is loud, not much you can do about that but if its the air pull thats loud you can fix that for free basically. Just make a home made silencer out of a pill jar or something similar, that will kill the noise. Out of the skimmers mentioned i'd go with the coral box. Most of the skimmers mentioned would work just fine but for the price, performance and heart of the skimmer (Jebao DC pump) its pretty tough to beat. The pump is superior to the octo's. Skimz and most other DC driven skimmers out there use the exact same brand of pump. Simplicity skimmers are also nice and inexpensive as well (and use the same DC pump's). I'm sure you'll be fine with any of the above skimmers though, its just preference these days as most skimmers are similar in design.

If you have not done so already, unplug it and take the pump out and clean it completely. Check the air nipple on the venturi. Usually they plug up with salt and debris. Clean it and it may be much quieter...

I have a RLSS i5 with a waveline 2500HDC pump, I can not even hear it run.

Thanks. Yes, I have to clean it very regularly - the pump and entire skimmer- just to get it to function correctly for a week or so. The noise is just the straw the broke the camel's back.

Do you look Inside the air inlet to see if there a build up in there?? It makes a huge difference when cleaned out.

Are you talking about the silencer thing that's shaped like a cylinder? Or where the air hose enters the pump itself? I've cleaned the pump thoroughly (every time I take the whole skimmer out to clean- which is a lot) and the silencer has been cleaned a couple times. It gets rinsed and soaked and rinsed like the rest of the body anyway, but it's not really dirty. It's missing the top of the silencer and I had to put some cotton over it to quiet it down. That worked, but this darn thing is so old, it just needs replacing at this point.

I have a Reef Octopus int 300 SSS with DC pump, it's really quiet, my tank sits in the living room and noise was a priority, one day a friend of mine asked me if the Tank was operating, lol.

Lol OK. Sounds like your cleaning it good. A silencer top would certainly help. But of you can afford it I would get the octopus skimmer.

The Reef Octopus skimmers are in my budget and I'm looking at them seriously. These other skimmers that have been mentioned are being looked into also.

I also have the int150 and it sits next to me in the living room and isn't a problem at all and it works great.
