I need to save money

How's it going guys? I'll try to make this short and simple. I am tired of buying filter cartridges every other week. I like to replace my filter with my weekly water change but its becoming to expensive for me. I'm a college student and i need to save a few bucks. A while back i read somewhere that you can use some other cheap "material" to stick in the filter and it will work just fine. Do you know what this "material" might be?
I have a hang on back filter on my 30 gallon.

Thats the stuff! Filter Floss, I used it in my media baskets for my IM Nuvo 20, cheap and you just throw it away, cut a new piece and replace.

If your cartridge also has the carbon in it, just grab a bag and granular activated carbon.
