I have been researching reef tanks for over 2 years now and have decided I want a 40 breeder mixed reef with a sump with cuttlefish (S. bandensis) and I am getting impatient to start actually keeping a reef.

The problem is the job I just got has a two year contract after which I will probably be moving somewhere else. Is it worth setting up a 40 for just two years or would a smaller (20g) all in one with lps and softies and a few small fish be the better choice?

My vote is for the AIO. You're going to want a well established system for cuttlefish anyway. I actually wouldn't recommend getting them even if you had more time, they have a very short lifespan in the ocean and even shorter in captivity.

In the long run it’s going to cost you more money setting up the 20 then 40. If you really want to start the 40 do it now.

I've moved across country several times, from interstate, right up to "all the way" across (NY to Eugene, OR)

Depending on how far and what time of year you are moving, I would recommend that you sell off any livestock and save yourself the stress. Stuff goes wrong and delays happen on long moves.

That just leaves the equipment, and you are the only one that can answer as to if it's worth it. Do you have the room, energy and will to move a larger tank? If yes, then go for the tank you want now and just move it. Unless you are very tight with space in your moving plan, it's probably not that much difference. Just separate everything and pack it well...

my opinion, not much difference between 20 and 40. Go for it! But agree on the cuttlefish maybe not best option. This is a constant learning hobby so you no better than to start now. Most likely (I Bet) after these 2 years you will be wanting a bigger tank at your next place. lol.

Thanks for the replies. I have heard of those drawbacks with cuttlefish, but I think the pros outweigh the cons of a short life span, heavy food demand, and large added bioload. Eventually I would switch to fish, but it was this video that started me on reeftanks so I think I have to give it a shot.
