I Overdosed Coral Snow...about 60ml+ instead of 19ml, I know what a bonehead move! Gezzzzzz I feel bad enough but you can say it. Calcium and Magnesium are extremely high right now.. Mag- 1590+ and Calcium just above 500+.. I just noticed what I did, it has been 7 days now. I do have a few frag sticks that are going bald as of now ( just 2 that I have in my 90gal ) but it's still on my system with a 120gal and a 60gal fuge. I am going to start exercising many smaller water changes maybe as much as every other day to drop Mag and Cal... PH is holding 8.18, No 7.5, Po 0.03, Alk is still maintaining 9.2 via AFR, I also cut it's dosing back 10mins down to 30 mins dosing time vs 40mins. Salinity was also a bit high as well... dropped it down to 1.025 + 1/2...and tested again - same. Would any of these be a solid correction on my part?.... I am searching for any help whatsoever with my demise. Thank you for any help and/or any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Coral snow shouldn’t raise any of your parameters. It’s a harmless flocculant. Something else happened. Likely another overdose of a supplement.

MG and CA are not extremely high but entering the higher zone.

I’d do nothing and let the system stabilize.

Water changes always a good idea in overdose cases, but slowly.

Which exact product did you use? Kz doesn’t raise anything as it’s just a calcium carbonate and can’t be over dosed.

I did dose calcium carbonate pretty heavy- well alot..!

Coral snow (as in Korallin Zucht’s product) is as far as I know - just plain Calcium Carbonate, which is inert and is used as a fluculent.

If anything happened due to its overdose, it is by irritation of corals, and not because of a direct influence of the chemistry of your water, although in turn it may have influenced the uptake.

I wouldn’t do much in this situation other than blowing off the calcium carbonate off of your corals, and balancing your dosage according to the current uptake.

I was about to ask the same question. I have a DIY coral snow solution I just dump into my 45 gallon without measuring and have never had any issues.

Then if it really can not be overdosed, I do feel like it went that way. Then why could i have a both Mag/ Cal spike and start loose coral flesh shortly after dosing Snow..?

It may have affected Caroline growth, that’s the only thing that consumes more Mag than others. But both Can and Alk would be affected as well.

Check your Alk dosing pump, it may need to be recalibrated, or if you make your own Alk solution - it may came out less potent than usual.

Could be coincidental, I've dumped in so much coral snow/carlcium carbonate mixture that I couldn't see anything, and not affecting anything. Its inert, you must have something else going on to cause the issue you are having. I am curious as to what is going on though

I use AFR mixing is never a problem at all... Always perfect going on 2 years now...

Then what could it be..? As I am lost right now and dont want corals peeling...

AFR does increase Calcium more than the 2 others. Combine this with insufficient flow and a lot more Calcium Carbonate which irritated your Caroline algae, and you get a decrease in both Ca and Alk uptake + a slight increase in Ca dosage.

Very possible.
Look at your Caroline algae, see if it changed its colors.

Edit: meant both Ca and Mag. Although Alk uptake would be affected as well.

Checking right now... You menched above the word decrease, I am now higher than ever on both mag/cal...?

Just checked all and any Coraline its absolutely beautiful and no change on anything what so ever.. Other than high tests and some coral flesh lose..

Yes, decrease in uptake.

AFR increase your Ca more than Alk and Mag.

Caroline uptakes more Mag than Alk and Ca.

If Caroline stopped growing, it would increase all 3, and Mag would increase more.

Given that AFR increase Ca more than the 2 others, and combined with Caroline growth tanking, you’d get both Ca and Mag increasing.

It may take a few days though for the Caroline to show signs, and it may start growing back in a few days, increasing the uptake back to where it was before. Just watch your parameters and adjust. Blow off any residue of the Calcium Caronate you see on the surface, if there’s any left overs.

Could it be as simple as a flow problem.. But then high tests.. I am just lost and maybe dont really understand what I should do... Maybe just wait it out?
