Drum filter versions - TinyDrum

I have been searching for a drum filter for saltwater for a couple years now. No idea why these aren't more popular.


Anyone know anything about this company?

Never heard of them or used anything like this for saltwater. My only experience with rotary screen drum filters was with somthing like this..

There were 2 in the facility filtering roughly 40000gal each of highly stocked freshwater fish. They were beasts and i was always interested in drum filters for aquarium use, but I find myself doing less and less mechanical filtration. Only way I keep my nitrates from bottoming out at this point is with ammonia. Might as well leave as much in as I can unless I have to.

no. way better in fact. it's a essentially a self cleaning mechanical filter. the water pours over the mesh of the drum and as it gets clogged it rotates and eventually is cleaned my spray nozzles.

there is one guy on here who got a big one for ponds and converted it for saltwater use. he has a build thread with lots details. last time I talked with him it was still in use on his system.

I have been in the process of what I guess you could call a "Dream Build" for a couple months. My wife wanted to take the kids to Orlando over the holiday, Disney is great and all but one of the main attractions I knew I wanted to see was World Wide Corals. The guys at WWC were super awesome...

That looks great! I like the self-cleaning. It's probably the filter sock lobby slowing down innovation. It's probably not much different than a fleece roller in technology and price.

Only one question then, if it's self-cleaning and mostly metal, how am I going to pollute if I'm not tossing fleece in the trash? No worn-out filter socks, no full fleece rolls, no clogged poly-fill... No plastic to throw away.*

*I really hope people know I'm joking with this. I support reducing waste.

I ran this idea by Sam at Parlaquatics @Projects with Sam about a year ago now and he had working a prototype in less than a week! It was super impressive and he has some innovative ideas on the spray function as well.

id be very interested to see what you , or anyone else could come up with. like I said I am a little surprised these aren't really a "thing" in saltwater reef keeping

Sam already has the tech bits on his fleece roller too, which would be my biggest barrier. That and convincing the missus to let me buy the filter part.

I've been wanting something to replace my filter socks, and don't have a lot of room on the sump for a roller.

These are very popular in pond filtration. I drew one up in cad several years ago but never got around to building it. I will try to dig up the model.

just need to put the design and photos up on my page. The larger fits a 75Gallon tank and handled at least 9000gph with lots of flow to spare. These all use 5" floss. I am currently making one that takes 10" floss for someone to put on a 280G sump. Its sick and I bet it will be able to handle over 20k gph. @ 30 microns.
My drum filter I'm working on the patents so not sure I'll post the photos. (Though after seeing the above; not sure I need todo patents.)

Thanks for the mention! I'll be getting my testing environment setup here pretty soon so will be able to get some real metrics and performance information for these filters to post.
I suppose I can include a picture of my drum filter... its been burning a hole in my pocket for awhile.

Worked good but oddly so I took it off my DT. It wasn't until I was working on the ParlaRoller that I figured out optical switches cant point down into the water without odd behavior...

And here is my behemoth filter with a 10"x19" filterable deck on 1/3rd of a 280G:
