I really wish....

Most other forum have their own experts. Sps is a very popular forum and it needs a group of experts. But what defines an expert in sps? For my self i look at reefer like Sanjay , Mike Paletta , Sunny and all of the successful farmer which can grow sps from frag to colony. When u can grow a frag to big colony size it show u have knowledge and patience because it took a long time to do it.

I can see both sides to this, but here is something I noticed on another forum I read.
If you want a serious answer to your question from a mod or another expert then they have a standard form or set of questions that is answered with every thread. It weeds out the guesses and back and forth rhetoric of parameters.

If you don't take the time to answer the questions then they don't take the time to answer yours. I like that.

This forum would not exist without what you are describing. Some of the most prominent posters in their forums have no experience with what they are talking about - oreo in the lighting forum does not have a tank or that brandon guy in the general forums has a one gallon fishbowl or something like that. What you are asking for is not what this place is all about... which appears to be the most members, most clicks and most posts to sell ads. I am sure that people have noticed the amount of threads is decreasing lately.

I always thought that there should be a forum where anybody can ask, but only few can respond who have gone through a vetting process. People tag in the reefsquad like this, but you rarely see anything from them that impresses much - sometimes they try and help.

What is the reefsquad? I always see that tag and never see anyone reply unless I just don’t know they are part of the “squad”. Your tough on that Oreo dude jda, I have had a few laughs reading you two reply to each other!

Ah......no. This site is owned by somebody and they can edit / delete anything they wish. They may simply not choose to enforce it. In any respect, this site is not like a public sidewalk or newsgroup.

I'm also tired of the noob responses, which typically take the form of "what are your parameters" like an annoying script, to which the OP responds with water params that are completely within the growth range of SPS. To which the responder either doesn't respond, or responds with some absurdly trivial adjustment that's not relevant to the problem. Rinse / repeat.

The majority of hardcore SPS owners I know don't go near these forums simply because they have to wade through so many bad responses. Seems every guy with a biocube and half a dozen 1" SPS frags that haven't grown in 6months is an SPS expert.
Not to mention the attacks on the person and no debate whatsoever for the idea. Plus the the person asking the question either completely blows you off (their choice) or disappears when there is conflict.

I totally avoid the low level questions because why, so I can get torn apart by some guy who's ego flares up because of his 5 years of experience. Yah no thanks. I know how to fix those problems I have done it for 20 years, but whatever, not gonna help.

Also, what would happen with the influx of new people with boogers on frag plugs that think that they know it all only to disappear in a year or two after giving all kinds of dumb advice to people? What would this board be then? Rakkie is a recent one that comes to mind, but there are many, many others. Lots of you posting on this thread will be some of these, even though you do not know it yet. Nobody want to think that they are part of the under informed - they want to think that they know it all since they have had a few months or a few years of success when indeed these tanks are still in their infancy.

I have pretty much decided to stop helping on a daily basis. I just don't have time for the stupidity anymore. People are ask holes where they ask questions and tell you how you are all kinds of wrong because somebody else posted what they wanted to hear already or a YouTube video gave them some confirmation bias - I just hope that most of these folks buy calcium reactors and Tunze stuff so I can buy it on the used market after they fail.

It appears to me that the best way to actually help reefers is to screen and actually moderate, but that is not good for making money in the internet age. I hope that I don't break any hearts with the equation of: hobbyists < money.

I have been on these boards long enough to know who to look for when needing answers(FYI the reefsquad isn't any of them). I personally see the reefaquad as a joke. Ever see some of the answers they give? The reefsquad should consist of those "experts" you speak of.

I myself have been reefing on and off for over 20 years, does that make me an expert? Heck no!

I still stay out of the question that I have no business answering.

You don't have to be an expert to help and plenty do just that. The part that will/is drive me away is that if somebody want to do X, then one post by somebody who just registered yesterday that has just started to unbox their gear for a build thread (with the first page or two being taking a Apex out of a box) can confirm their bias and the are all in. If somebody with a few decades of actual experience says that X has some nuance and could be good here, bad here, that Dr. Holmes Farley has an article on it and otherwise tries to explain it, then the poster wants four more articles, a BRS video and one-hundred other posters to agree before they give it an ounce of thought.

Well....
I don’t need advice. I’m one of the ones giving experienced advice. I’m guessing you’re not an sps enthusiast?

Hey thank you! Been wondering about that for a while now, obviously I don’t get to search around this board much. Most of my time goes to this forum. There are a couple I see post In this forum that are part of the group but I figured more would be in there. Kinda cool to read all that but it makes me miss the tank of the month from back in the day for some reason.

Please list all your parameters and post a photo of your tank so we can help! Thanks!

:p

I’m not going to respond to the aiptasia and hair algae posts in this thread but I will say that we have a cool new feature coming that will allow you to upvote the best answers and things like that. Not new to the internet but something pretty new for forums. :) So that should help!

And let me just say this in the most loving way possible. If you don’t like Reef2Reef then I really hate that you don’t but no one is making you stay. Either help make it better or use another forum. Complaining doesn’t help anyone. Don’t like something? Know a better way? Have a good idea? Tell us about it in a respectful way and let’s work together to implement some of these changes. Some of the best parts of R2R came from growing pains and the ideas of the community. Negativity breeds negativity. If you truly care about the community let’s work together to make it better!! I’ll do my best to take every idea into consideration and to implement the changes needed for the good of the community. Sound like a plan?
