So I recently started a new tank, first overflow tank that I've owned. (But not new to saltwater).
I started this tank about 6 months ago with no fish so I could build live rock. Had chaeto in there for a couple months now, had a good led light set up for them that was mounted right above the sump. Chaeto was growing slowly since the tank was new and phosphate levels were still low but the chaeto was alive and a healthy dark green.
Then the accident happened.
I was changing the carbon. Pulling on the sock a little too hard because it was wedged.
When it broke free I hit my led light off the mount a d it fell right into the chaeto....
Instantly the surge protector switched off but we all know it took a shock.
That was 2 days ago.
Yesterday I noticed the chaeto had just a little bit of slime attached to the top of it (not much maybe a teaspoon)
But today I finnaly got a new led light and a better mount and when I turned it on I noticed the chaeto is a like lime green color and looks like it shrank...
Do you guys think it will recover or is it a loss?
Also does it produce any toxins when it fails because I do have fish in the tank at this point!

You can toss it or pull the dead parts off. Dead chato doesn’t do much but add nutrients back in.

Yeah dead Cheato has no effect whatsoever period. But I would just leave it alone because in my experience Cato tends to grow back. If the shock to your system then affect the fish immediately then I won't worry about it.

Get an algae turf scrubber or a chaeto reactor...chaeto sitting still in a refugium does very little

Mine like red light and i add iron to fuge area which feed chaeto
