I want pulsing Xenia - recommendations?

I want some pulsing xenia as my beginner coral. I have 3 months worth of cycling, and watching my CUC wander around. I have a biocube32, skimming and all that.

Anyone have a good source? Yes I know they will take over my tank. I've had 3 months of watching crabs and snails - are they making love or fighting??

My clowns are doing well and my chems look good. Will the snails reproduce? My clowns just seem interested in eating. They have hosted on my heater.

My suggestion, don’t. It becomes an over powering weed. Even on an island it finds a way!!

To me, coralline algae or a living coral is a dream. Now I have a cleanup crew, and a coral banded shrimp living the life of Riley.

Thanks Nburg. I'll try to find a good vendor. Amazing how things have changed. Back in the early 90's a chunk of pulsing xenia was 80 bucks. That was 2 weeks of groceries then.

I would say if you like it and want it, go for it. Xenia was my first coral too, have had it for about 2 and half months so far, it's grown slightly, but I'd like to see it invade like everyone says, and then have to deal with that, lol. Much preferable to have something struggle, for a newbie like me.

Best to put it on an island. This stuff will explode if left unchecked! So, I would keep it away from your main rock.
Unless you want a full rock of xenia...
Many different places sell it. I wouldn't spend any more than 15 on a large patch. Heck you could probably get a large amount free form a local reefers.

Wow I keep getting this response. Seeing the waving hands is what attracted me to reef keeping. At this point, 6 months in, Id like to see some life aside from my crabs, snails, and clowns.

Thanks man , I’m relatively newish (under 2 years) but Xenia is nice and flowy and my fiancés favorite coral , I’d recommend the thick stalk ones like I have , they are easy to prune with razor blade should you decide to trim- they would be covering the entire tank if I let them

I touch the base and they will start to let go.
dislodge their footing from the rocks is easy.
But when they’re floating around after , what to do with them ?

Sell them to other reefers 5$ a stalk I always have someone interested but I live in SoCal. Otherwise you can use them in sump instead of macro algae , great nutrient export. I use razor blade at base and move them around but they do grow back lol

Another thing is LFS credit ,Xenia is actually a popular coral , a couple months of trading it in could net you a torch, that is how I was able to afford mine

Any lfs around here doesn’t want them .
they already have too much .

easy beginner coral .
my wife wanted it after I told her I didn’t want it in the tank and warned of the plague like properties .

what was 1 frag a year ago is about 100 now

Interesting lol it doesn’t last too long at the lfs , great beginner coral and cheap I usually give a big colony 6-8 stalk for 20$ credit and they can sell a stalk for 20$ each
