I want some help designing a new setup

I'll see if I can find a picture of a tank like the one I'm thinking of. I'm just afraid to see the pricing of one LOL

I found this retro kit. This should be good, right? If I got 3 of these for a 6 foot? I plan to build me a new hood for my current 65 gallon using two of these and then transfer those over to my new tank when I get it.

Anyone have any suggestions on retro kits?

Back online finally...been very busy....

What do you all think of this idea for lights? 4 48" T5's: 2 in the front, 2 in the back and each pair overlapping about 12" at the center of the tank ( this is a 72" tank here ). In the middle, on the left and right sides, 1 250W halide for the shimmer effect and extra light.

I'm sold on T5's cause of the efficiency they offer. What wattage would I need for those bulbs to be effective to keep sps?

I just got that kit about 2 weeks ago or so.....I love it, T-5s rock. I got the UVI Super actinic Rs and they are as good a actinic bulb as the old URI super actinic VHO.

Thanks for the confirmation guys! Fishes2889, I'd love to get as many watts as possible cause i'm setting this tank up for SPS primarily and want to do it right from day one.

I found this kit which is basically the same as the one I just posted but includes EVERYTHING I want...4 t5's and 2 250W halides...the t5's are only 54W apiece though :(

AFter i include the bulbs, it's on 500 bucks!!! I chose XM 20K for the halides and TRU 10K's for the T5's...I am going for the actinic look on this tank...I hope using 20K's for the 250W halides will look right.

Tell me guys, over 25" of water, would 54W be sufficient to keep SPS? Fisshes2889, where have you seen 80W kits?

sheesh...I'm a '****...didn't realize that kit only had two T5's :(

Finally, I've come up with this...http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1369 with TRU actinics and http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1358 with TRU actinics for the T's and XM 10K's for the halides...I realized that 20K's aren't the same as actnics..plus, I can make the T5's come on firs/last to simulate sunrise/sunset....that means they'll be on longer and since they last longer, that makes sense.

Those two kits with bulbs ends up being 625 bucks...not shabby IMO..I'd LOVE to find a similar setup with 80W though for the T5's :D:D

so you don't want a 6' tank? if you are gonna go w/ a 4' tank get the 48" 120 gal tank. i love that size you got the depth to do some really cool aquascaping.

and the tank is only 24" tall.

Nope, still getting a 6' tank...the 48" bulbs would just overlap in the center for about 12" or so. The tank I have in mind is 25" tall and 24" deep ( front to back )

The fun ( if you call it that ) part is going to be building the hood and stand from scratch!!!

I'm beginning to think that 54W of light won't be enough for the T5 above 24" of water for sps. This will be bare bottom.

I basically want the halides for the shimmer effect. Could anyone give me some suggestions? What about the 80W t5's suggested above? is that maybe enough to keep sps?

I think you will be fine w/ HO t5's rather than overdriving them w/ a 660. Just keep your more demanding species in the upper half of the tank.

Overdriving them you will have to combat added heat and shortened bulb life.

JMO....
