It’s not just the corals that look better under a blue’ish spectrum though. Fish look better, rocks look better, coraline looks better, and even the inverts look better. I don’t understand why anyone would prefer a 10k or even 14k over an 18-20k spectrum. Too much blue, however, can look just as bad. Like a woman wearing too much makeup

It’s not just the corals that look fake under a blue’ish spectrum though. Fish look fake, rocks look fake, coraline looks fake, and even the inverts look fake. I don’t understand why anyone would prefer a windex tank over 14-20k spectrum. .................like someone wearing too much makeup.

It all depends on one's perspective;)

Meh. Try keeping zoas under that white lighting. Doesn't work very well. Not to mention it certainly doesn't prohibit algae growth. I always had issues with zoas keeping a 14k look. Since going nearly all blue (kessil so even all blue still has some white) all those problems went away.

But hey if you want your stuff to look blah go for it. Just don't complain when you buy something looking one way and then it looks blah in your tank. That I don't get.

If you cannot color coral under whiter lighting, then you might want to reevaluate your tank. The ONLY look that you cannot duplicate is the black-light look. All of the photos that I post on here are with 14k lighting ONLY without any blue LED or tubes and without any editing. I am not trying to be mean, but seriously trying to help.

If you like it bluer, then cool, but don't think for a minute that it is not possible to have great colors without all of the makeup. It is possible for corals to just be beautiful when they get out of bed.

All of these Z&P are under 14k MH only without any blues. Does this coralline look blah? Sand look purple? Corals look blah?

That's probably an issue from something else, or LEDs, though. Zoanthids grow pretty much as close to the surface as they can. Many places they are coming out of the water at low tide. I've never had issues growing them under 6500k lighting or natural sun.

I like the variety of colors you can see under whiter lights. I don’t like the all blue look with lots of flourecent green pigments blaring through and no other colors really showing up true. I prefer to see what’s naturally there and not what’s hidden.

it was meant to be a joke people but hey, whatever, some of the pictures I see of stuff for sale are ridiculous.

in all honesty.. lighten up people!!!! if you are offended by this, I really dont know what to say other than perhaps you shouldn't look at everything you see and say "is there a way I can possibly be offended by this?"

18k or 20k for sure. Most our corals are pretty deep. I dive, a lot, it’s very blue down there. That is what it really looks like. Not the just blues obviously, but 20k is spot on with what it looks like 80-120ish feet down.

When looking at pics of coral for sale I pay attention to the color of the plug, rack , and sand to judge colors. Yeh they are tricky.

No, to my eyes it's a very bright look that is icy white.......slight tinge of blue. If you have sand it will look pure white it won't have a blue hue to it. That is my own estimation that it's 14k

Plenty of pics here--

I also explain in my thread what happens if you go too blue.......it darkens the tank and our eyes can't see certain colors as well.

Zoas/palys under my lights--- I do agree that adding some blue to get an extra slight pop can work fine, but not so much that it turns the overall ambient look dark blue. This is nothing new............it used to be VHO actinics that did this job, now people use the LED bars.

Sooooo
We agree. A little blue, 14k-20k makes corals look better.

My friend knows, but so far he hasn't killed anything. Sick fish have been caught though. He's been in there almost a decade and not really lost any fish that weren't brand new or sick. So hard to say!

Color wise he's kind of purple

Compared to 65k to 10k yes,,,,,,,,,but if you mean a tank with the amount of blue similar to JFox's tank then, no,that's waaaay past a 20k look.

Go read my thread.........I think you'll know where I'm coming from.

I run a 6 bulb ati T5 dimmable sunpower with 3 B+ and 3 C+. I love the way my reef looks with this combo. Not too white and not too blue and all my coral grow under this light combo, no issues.

I completely agree to your point about JF, cornbread and many other of the online vendors use way too much blue along with filters and editing. That’s why I stated too much blue looks bad in my original post. 14-20k looks best to my eye, 18k specifically. Everything in my tank looks brown/yellow around 6.5-12k.
