Is ice melt with magnesium chloride and calcium chloride safe to use for calcium dosing. Autozone has it for 4.99

I have heard of people doing this. Although I see it to be very risky. You might want do a little more research or have someone else chime in. Sorry I couldn't help!

I use Prestone Driveway Heat as my Calcium source and MAG Flakes as my Magnesium Chloride source. (Baking Soda and Epsom Salt are the other two ingredients I use to make all dosing solutions.) FYI, I’ve been doing this since 2008 and my tank couldn’t look better.

You need to read Randy Holmes Farley’s article that talks about these recipes. HERE is that article.

Yea Ive just started thid method. I got the driveway heat but they had 20lbs of the other brand for 4.99 and I didnt know if it was safe because of the magnesium flake. I will go and get a couple of bags to stock up because here in Alabama its a seasonal item and you cant find it very often.

I think is would be possible but it would be better to use calcium chloride and magnesium chloride seperately for control.

I get both from brentagg here is huntsville.

my .02

Without a doubt these are mixed up separately. Their use and consumption is different and therefore require different dosing regiments.

I have separate bottles of Alk, Calc and Mag solutions.....per Randy Holmes Farley recipes.

A primary concern would be contaminants (anything other than the magnesium chloride / calcium chloride) that might be present in ice melt products. USP - food grade - magnesium chloride and calcium chloride would be safer in this respect.
