well, its official, there is now ich in my wifes new tank. i can see the cycsts on him but also his corneas are now covered by a film of some sort.

He is in rough shape right now, any help is appreciated.

the details: 40 gallon RSR tank, 3 months old. doing regular water changes, levels are fine, nutrients high but not crazy. been dosing vibrant to help battle the uglies.

i noticed the film 2 days ago and dosed melafix thinking bacterial infection. yesterday saw the ich and gave him an 8 minutes fresh water dip. I fired up my hospital tank, will transfer today. give him a little copper.

He didnt eat this morning.

suggestions???

THANK YOU! to everyone for the help!

I think your heading in the right direction on getting him in QT. I'm no expert on treating cows with copper, but cupramine seems from what I've read is what people have used with them.

#reefsquad? @Big G, @HotRocks,

This looks more like velvet to me. You need to QT and treat as soon as possible. Cupramine is probably the best choice. You could also use chelated copper.

It's always tough for me to diagnose puffers and cows because of their skin.

Thanks for the help!

Where there any other fish exposed to him?

I agree with the velvet diagnosis and treatment.

thanks guys. I thought velvet as well, mostly due to the wide ranging "coat" of his skin. His naturally bumpy skin does make it very difficult to diagnose.

There is a couple other fish in there but none of which should be too copper sensitive.

FWIW, although cowfish can releae toxins, most of what i have read indicates that the long horn is least susceptible to this. even people that have killed them have not had problems with poisoning.

fingers crossed.

cowfish in qt now. 50% cupramine and a dose of kannaplex.

Although they can release toxins it is pretty rare that they do. I know of people who have had them die and not crash the tank. I’m not saying it can’t happen but that unless the fish is fighting for its life it probably won’t.

ok guys, he looks really bad. just hanging on the bottom of the tank. Is there anything I can do to help him get through the night?

I dont think he is going to make it. My wife, who just had knee surgery on thursday will be crushed!!

I have the following meds on hand:

formalin
kannaplex
cupramine
prazipro
maracyn oxy
melafix
clout

With velvet, copper or Chloroquine Phosphate (prescription required in the U.S.) are the go-to medications. In your case, that's the Cupramine.

The thing is ... neither of those can affect the trophonts which are actively feeding on the fish _right_now_. Those will have to drop away into the water column on their own - but the copper _will_ prevent new dinospores from attacking the fish. This poor fellow is going to have to "weather the storm" for tonight, and if he survives each day should become easier to get through.
