Hey everyone, i just wanted to write about my experience with these two annoying issues int he reefing hobby. About 4 weeks ago I noticed my Kole tang having the salt specs on it's fins and body. So, here we go . I bit the bullet and removed all the fish from the DT and starting treating with formalin and copper. Formalin being lightly dosed being that it's a very strong substance that can reduce oxygen levels. Anyhow it has been about 4 weeks and the fish are QT eating well and doing great. I can say I have done a lot of WC's in these tanks which is never fun, but I am getting to the point where it should be time to get them adjusted to get back into the DT. What worked for me may notwork for anyone else, but I can say it might be a pain, but remove all the fish, QT them and leave them be, the less stress the better. Feed them well, don't overcrowd a QT (if you have a lot of fish) and keep them well fed. I have a 350 red sea, SPS dominant tank, and they're all doing well, my inverts are enjoying the hassle free time of grabbing food when they can without the fish around lol.
All I can say is be patient, wait the 8 weeks maybe a little longer if you want and enjoy the fish-less tank. I wanted to write this to help others, I wasn't convinced on using Ich attack in my tank or other stuff in the manner, yet letting this parasite die and keeping the parameters in check and the fish stress free. I will finish this update when the fish are ready to go back. I also had some battling on water changes often in the QT tanks. the first 3 weeks I used the formalin and copper, but my ammonia was always spiking every day. Doing water changes every day is kind of annoying when you work, but you have to do what you have to do. What I have seen and have done is used turbostart in my qt tank's and cycled the tank and the wc's have stopped, still dosing copper very little I have seen no sign of the parasite and have lowered the water changes.
