I just noticed this today. She has been in my tank for 3 days and looked very healthy at the lfs. Can anyone identify this white stringy spot coming off her gill? I can’t tell if it is just mucus or ich. If it is ich what should the treatment be?

It’s not ich. At this point, it could just be mucus, but if it spreads, you need to consider that it might be Brooklynella. Do you have a treatment tank available?

I don’t have a treatment tank. It is in a 90 with only one other lighting maroon. I saw that formalin is used to treat Brooklynella. Would that be harmful to the clown? And should I treat for Brooklynella ASAP?

I do have a 5 gallon empty tank would that be fine for a treatment tank?
If you can manage the ammonia, you can treat in the five gallon, but I'm worried this could spread to your other clowns, and then that tank would be too small. Treating Brook in your 90 gallon has a lot of issues - are invertebrates present, etc. Here is a link to some basic information about Brook: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/brooklynella.247938/

Think a freshwater dip would be a piece of mind? May even rid of the mucus.

Yes - very good idea; that would buy some time if it is Brook, and would dislodge it if it is just mucus...

I did the freshwater dip and it cleared the mucus on the gills. The clown seamed a lot better and less dizzy. Could that have just been mucus buildup from the stress of a new tank? This fish was in a display tank at my lfs for years. Its female partner jumped out. It then went into 40 ish gallon tank from a 100+ tank. Now it is in my 90 with a partner that is smaller. That was all over a couple month period.

If it returns that might point more to Brook. If it doesn’t, then probably mucus. Could go either way....

It has returned this morning. The fish looks much healthier though. The dorsal fun is now up and she it swimming around much more. If I were to treat it in the display there is only one other clown and nothing else. Where can I find the 37% formaldehyde?

I’m really sorry, I don’t have a source for small amounts of formalin. There was a Kordon product, but I’m not sure if it is still on the market. I get more be by the gallon at pentair aquatic ecosystems or Carolina biological.

When I do the formalin dip should I use 37% solution? Also what ratio should the formalin solution be to saltwater?

Consider 37% formaldehyde as 100% formalin. The calculation is gallons times ppm divided by 266 to give milliliter of formalin to use. I often use 150 ppm formalin for 45 minutes with good aeration. In a 2 gallon bucket, that would be: 2 * 150/266= 1.13 ml. I would round that down to 1.1 ml. Counting drops isn’t a very accurate way to dose this, but people count 20 drops per ml

Use general cure or ruby rally pro with RO WATER to form a bath for treatment or ruby is reef safe option
