Ich on a fish that Ive had for almost 2 years.

Recently moved a kole from my 40 gallon to my 125. The 125 was set up recently with dry rock cycled with media from my 40 and all new water (did add live sand). I have never had an issue with ich as I have qt'd everything. After about a week of it being in the tank it started showing spots that to me look exactly like ich. It started with one spot on its tail and yesterday was 4. It is localized to the tail for now. Can someone explain how this is possible? No other fish in my 40 are showing any signs. Could it'd be in the live sand? The current plan is do nothing unless I see spots on the body then move to qt to reduce stress.
 
Could have went through quarantine or been there in the tank and now new stressed fish showing it, maybe a cyst came with a coral or an invert.
What's ur QT regimen.
I try to feed well and add vitamins, oversized UV and keeping water quality and having hiding places to allow the fish immunity to overcome what's in the tank.

This fish went through about a week and a half of observation, noticed some ich so 30 days copper at max level. then about a week at about half dose to see if all was clear. Moved the following weekend. Fish didn't show signs until the move.

I did not qt before moving to my 125.
 
There's a famous thread on here about no-QT systems, and that ich showing up is a sign of a fish with a weakened immune system. Worth a read if just for some new knowledge. I can't say I know anything about it though, everything is vigorously quarantined by LFS here (and costs way more as a result :eek: )


If you quarantine fish, there will be nothing for the fish to become immune to and any slight infection will crash the tank. Fish are not delicate creatures that need coddling and they almost never get sick. They have a fantastic immune system as long as we don’t try to short circuit it.

Not bad but could be a cyst that formed before u ramped up copper and that hatched while you were at half the dose. Statistically low probability though.
If I'm not going to observe for 2-3 weeks I prefer to keep fish for one more week at full strength and remove directly without allowing the infection. There are reports of cysts that can last longer especially at lower temperature. Not sure if they can withstand copper for 4 weeks though. It also could have been dormant disease in ur tank.
Maintaining an ich free tank is no easy task, I thrive more to prepare fish to handle it via fattening in qt or introduction tank, boosting foods with vitamins.
I had velvet years back in my tank which killed half of my fish, took fish 2-3 weeks to die as they were healthy (vs 48 typical kill time). I stayed months without any new fish intro then made sure to properly prepare my fish and I now have more than 90 fish in the system with no sign of ich or velvet.
Ich was there and I could see outbreaks although mild and no losses. With time I saw it less and less frequently till I never saw it again.
I added 4 Achilles in last 10 years all well QTd one for more than 6 months and non made it before. Last one made it perfectly and has been doing great for close to a year, hence I'm more for living with ich than trying to eliminate it.
One theory says that as fish immunity improves if ich isnt seen on any fish for 6 weeks then the disease has wiped itself, again all theory.
Believe the recent microbial check for tank water technique will allow us to understand more how things are going in our tanks and how diseases evolve.
 
Be sure it's ich. I see a "spot" on one of my fish from time to time and it's just a piece of sand that's off later that day.
Exactly why I'm not just chasing it around the tang to catch it again. Was very stressful on BOTH parties the first time.
 
Sucks bc I was ready to finish plumbing the systems together this weekend. But not worth risking two systems.
