This is a picture of my clownfish Charlie. Who passed away during my original tank wipeout, I have thought this was ich. But the die off occurred while I was on vacation, so I only have this pic ( this is about 4-6 days before he died) now the ive been browsing this forum. I’m not sure whether or not it’s ich or velvet.

(Make sure your phone screen brightness is all the way up to see)

This DT has been fallow for 12 weeks at this point. And now I’ve got new fish in QT.

Thanks R2R

Could be either, though the size and amount of dots make me think velvet. Luckily they are both able to be treated with copper or CP

On a clownfish, we look to see if you have a mix of big and small spots. Usually indicates Brooklynella.

It effected all the fish in the tank, which iirc only effects clownfish?

It's been 12 weeks since you took your fish out of your DT, or they all died? Either way, the diagnosis is irrelevant at this point (unless you just are just curious).

According to the sticky the fallow period for both are:
  • Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) - 76 days
  • Velvet (Amyloodinium) - 6 weeks
  • Brooklynella aka “Clownfish disease” or “Brook” - 6 weeks
You are at 12 weeks (84 days), so your DT should be fine. You could do the black molly test (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/freshwater-black-mollies-vs-marine-fish-diseases.312166/), but if it shows anything, the timer start over.

If you had fish in your DT that you moved to QT, hopefully you treated them. In your QT, are you medicating new arrivals, or just observing?

All fish in the DT died before I got back home. It is irrelevant. But I’m very curious. I will be treating all new arrivals for internal parasites with general cure and a 30 day round of copper treatment followed by atleast a week of observation before adding anything back into the DT, I also do a 72 day qt on all inverts and corals
