Brought this flasher wrasse home today from lfs. Just first noticed symptoms.

I am going to dose cuprion and bring it to .2ppm over 48 hours unless you recommend something else. Please let me know! Thanks!

Looks like velvet to me, most likely. I’d recommend copper power (1.75 PPM) and a Hanna copper checker to measure accurately but if you use ionic copper like cuprion you need copper levels of 0.5 PPM and a Hanna copper checker to monitor accurately as well.

Should I do a slow ramp though to dose it or should I immediately dose to recommended levels?

I’d increase with 5-6 doses over 6-12 hours. This because velvet is no joke and fast-acting. The gradual increase is what’s important, not so much the timeline. Several doses is what makes or breaks it with wrasse, often.

Gotcha. I’ve dozed 5 drops (of 20) and will add more when I wake up and then continue to dose throughout the day. Thanks!

I agree with ford4family, looks like velvet.. When I had velvet, giving the fish a 5 minute freshwater dip then a 90 minute Acriflavine MS bath seemed to have helped a ton.. then continuing with the copper in QT...

Be sure to stock up on antibiotics now just in case the wrasse gets bacterial infections as it's very common after velvet ... kanaplex, metroplex, furan 2 and general cure.. especially if it's hard to get locally.. because bacterial infections can kill quickly.. best to see it and treat within an hour/asap vs see it and having to wait 24-48 hours until you have access to antibiotics.. which can be too late..

If I may ask, what made you diagnose this as velvet over ich? I am trying to get better with my diseases and want to know what you looked for. It still isn't a large amount of dots, but they do look less bumpy like ich does and have the 'flat' look of velvet.

Will Velvet cloud over the eyes as well? The entire fish turns fuzzy including the eyes. Kills very quickly . What does that sound like?
Thanks Gabeb for me busting in on your question.

Smaller spots, the wrassse is a small fish so that’s used for scale, the subject is a wrasse which isn’t often impacted much by ich due to their thick slime coats, and the spots are pretty numerous and in somewhat uncharacteristic places to find ich in all but the most extreme cases.

It sounds dumb, but I never considered that the spots would stay the same size and you could use the fish as a scale. Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it.

No worries, I was wondering the same. I had 2 people ID it as ich in another forum so you really never know. Seems more like velvet to me idk. Either way... treatment is the same so.

This forum is great because I have noticed that 1) the ratio of experts on the forum is higher, lots of great minds on here and 2) most people won't comment if they do not know the answer to your question or direct you to someone who does know about your specific problem.

Another truck I use is to use the size of the fish’s eye relative to its’ body to indicate how large of a specimen of the individual species is — smaller fish have larger eyes relative to their bodies, this can be useful sometimes as well :)

Correct, same treatment. In fairness flasher wrasses do get ich more than some other varieties but often it’s not very noticeable or doesn’t impact then marginally until they’re already ill or weak. Some wrasse can even live with velvet for a good time without symptoms, which is why they’re such common “Typhoid Marys”. They are somewhat tough comparatively to quarantine properly but it’s so important because they can harbor velvet without symptoms for months, sometimes years until a stress event gives velvet the upper hand. Other fish don’t have the thick slime coats, sleep protected in mucous cocoons, or sleep in the sand away from these parasites.

Thank you, we certainly try.

Yeah I’m going with the velvet diagnosis because the people here I usually trust more and they have more posts and experience etc
